Hi All.
Played TOME 2 many years ago and have just returned to find the landscape very different. Looks good though!
Could i ask for some basic thoughts on building a fighter/mage, i.e. a balance of swords and spells. Which attributes do you recommend i focus on (at least initially), skills, weapons and armour, etc.
Many thanks!

Maybe you can play Berserker/Bulwark & Archmage each for several times, and you will understand the basics of melee & spell aspects of this game. Then you will have a better understanding of Arcane Blade, if it's what you mean to do.

Re: Basic fighter/mage build guidance
Each style of magic has an associated "fighter/mage" connected, though you start with only Arcane Blade unlocked. If you head on o're to the Spoilers board, I believe there is like four guides for them, depending on what you want to do. In general, Arcane Blade runs up to baddies and bumps them, which triggers a chance to automatically cast a spell (and later, when you crit, magically explode).
Re: Basic fighter/mage build guidance
To build on what Prof. Cirno said, each melee/mage type for each of the resources (for which there are a number) runs very differently. Some are bump heavy, some are melee skill heavy, some ranged skill heavy, some sustain heavy, etc. Some have to worry a lot about keeping their resources up, others don't even have to pay attention.
As for Arcane Blade, I don't play it much, but I've heard it's best to go Sword and Shield, juggle 4 points in Flame (i.e. take them out every level up and then put them back as the most recent 4 points) until level 10 and then unlock Stone and dump them all in Stone and Earth. Of course, I'm sure there are other options, but that seems to be something of a 'common wisdom'.

Arcane/blade is one of the most confusing classes. And you'll need to unlock Rock for Arcane Blade too, if you want the most effective build.
Wyrmic or Reaver are more intuitive.
