Steam achievement oddness

Hope this the best forum for this...

Just got my account hooked up with my steam account. Played a bit here & there, have a few achievements.
I decided to roll out a dwarf berzerker, partly to test out whether I could earn achievements I already have earned here.
Created character on easier/adventure, completed the first quest. The steam achievement did not trigger.

I scratched my head, skimmed the steam achievements list, and came up with another test. I have never played any exploration mode.
Created a dwarf archer, decided to see if I could get the exploration level dwarf quest achievement. Completed quest, achievement did not trigger.

Is this a known issue? It's not game breaking, but I was looking forward to the new array of little badges becoming available, for fun.
I suppose to be completist I should try to earn an achievement I've never earned in any fashion on te4.org...

Update: on third dwarf playthrough Squadmate went through properly. I'm at a loss...
