Displacement Mage

#1 Post by The Revanchist »

Foreword: I realize that I have an ongoing (or fledgeling) project started already, but that's why this is in the idea forum. Anyway:

The class concept is a mage? who eschews most direct-damage spells (lightning bolt, fireball, pulverizing auger, etc) in favor of conveyance and mobility schools.

This class would have a much greater capacity for moving things from point a to point b, but suffer from a lack of "normal" spells.

I haven't had much time put into this yet, truth be told, but I think that, at the very least, it would be an interesting change.

The class talents would probably focus on trees that involve:
-Transporting self
-Transporting others
-Enhanced Mobility
-Stealth? (The idea behind that being a way to easily isolate a single enemy, letting you fight them on your terms)

The class would also not have access to the default Conveyance generic, becuase of their more practiced options.

Things this class has (the pros):
Very high field control. (Unparalleled?)
Various options for avoiding, or reducing the dangers of combat.

Things this class does not have (the cons):
Immediate means of damage. (Could be very problematic against enemies with good regeneration, and in vaults)
Immediate means of damage mitigation.

While this is far from a well-developed idea, I think it has potential. It just needs a lot of work.

Although it might seems like an interesting idea, It really dont feel enjoyable much. You already have conveyance or spacetime weaving. There should be some purpose, something that will make it satisfying to move/teleport/displace foes.
Also this smells more with chronomancy than arcane studies.

This sounds a lot like the Ascetic, which is an addon class (link in my sig).

If you're not opposed to using addons, do check it out!
Check out my addons: Nullpack (classes), Null Tweaks (items & talents), and New Gems fork.

Paradox Mages cover some of this ground, as they have a variety of ways to move/control opponents while not having the raw blasting capability of some other classes. They're great fun to play (I think, at any rate) but tipping the scale further would lead to frustration.

A few ideas, though: Implementing some system where violently throwing a monster into a wall or other monster should lead to damage (like Willful Strike from the Doomed). I could definitely see a Passive or Sustained ability that enhances this damage, or adds/enhances a chance to Daze, so that you can focus on throwing opponents around like pinballs.

An area effect that enhances all enemy-movement abilities (maybe something like Null Friction).

Something like Fearscape to deal with something particularly nasty, instead of moving it around in our world you send it to another plane.

Also sounds a lot like the Arcanist in housepets arcanum addon. Focuses on pure magic and the cosmos, even adds temporal damage to phase door and teleport when used on enemies

That one gets every Arcane direct-damage spell in the game, doesn't it?

That's a ton of direct-damage spells.

(Plus the new direct-damage spells it gets.)

Paradox Mage does some of this, yeah, but they're more about LOW direct-damage, and they have a lot of low-damage spells with movement riders. IMHO their Gravity tree is really fun.

Arcanist does not get Manaclash! :P
The Distortion category Arcanist gets enhances Temporal and Conveyance.
Or you can focus on Arcane or Darkness.
My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.
