Charlatan--A Rogue subclass

#1 Post by catwhowalksbyhimself »

Finally have it up there. This is the first posted version and is not in a final polished state, but should be playable. The Charalatan is a rogue that use stage magician type tricks to confuse and manipulate his foes. It probably needs a lot of balancing and bug fixes, so do report away.

Note, this is for 1.0.1. I am looking at some major overhauls for the current version.

Quick look at the code shows a few things:

- Entrancement immunity (target:canBe("entrancement")) seems like it is created for the damage type. IMO, it should use confusion immune, or stun, or something else instead of creating a new one.
- Numbing agent description should read "...a %d%% chance of dazing the opponent..."
- 200 dexterity to reduce the cooldown of some of the dagger skils by one (from 5 to 4) seems like a lot.
- Drop weapon may run into rounding issues with the description and effect radius not matching up.
- Evade Harm description and effect values do not match.
- Ego Maniac increases saves on unlearn as well as on learn.
- Amaze description should be "...Mesmerized foes are always affected..."
- Cursed Wand description: "Point a fake magic wand...chance to paralyze...always affected."
- Fast draw says all skills use self:getDex(15) for scaling, but some use self:getDex(10)
- Can they please be allowed in the ID and arena as well as the campaign?
- Talent icons will help usability a lot, even if they are just placeholders. Ditto for timed effects.

EDIT: The base icons can be found Here.

The core is all there, and it's looking like it will be a very fun class.

Yikes, that's a worse list then I thought. Thanks for producing it though and I'll get on it tomorrow.

It works in the arena fine for me. Haven't tried ID yet though.

EDIT: fixed grammar and description errors and uploaded new version.

Hey there, first off iam a great fan of the charlatan and already tried him i guess 2 years ago, when he was published first.
Great that he is back!!

I noticed a few things:
the charlatan starts with the dual strike skill but seem to miss the dual weapon fighting tree, so you cant improve it or learn flurry or whirlwind.
>>if this is intended the main dmg source seem to be the throwing daggerskills, which are nice, BUT:
- they are not scaling with knife mastery (at least from my test) and are not scaling from physical power (not 100% sure here)
- To make up for that they dont break stealth (which is absolutly great and perhaps even overpowered), because you can indefinetly do dmg without beeing seen or targeted, if u have time you should be able to kill nearly everything with it, but it takes time because of the mediocre dmg.
>>I would suggest to give them a chance to break stealth or even treat them as normal attacks. It seems mandatory for me to fully skill stealth and put a cat-point in it for further improvement as a charlatan, because your main dmg source is build around it. SO let them break stealth perhaps at a percentage but let your dagger scale with it and althaugh dagger profiency.

As the only Rogue the charlatan has 2 methods of reenter stealth so the breachance woul not be that harmful.

Thx for bringing back the charlatan will do further testings with mindskills soon .....

I'll look into making dagger fighting more viable. The intention is that is be useful for finishing off damaged or controlled enemies.

I am aware that daggers probably needs a chance for break stealth, but I'm looking for more feedback before implementing. Thank you for yours. Throwing daggers are not currently intended to use the regular dagger skill and are meant to weaken enemies before finishing them off rather than always being the main source of damage. Probably does need quite a bit of adjusting.

Exciting my some of the new modding options DG has added, I've decided to look into reviving this class, with some major overhauling, and have updated the first post with all the stats and skills of the old version to facilitate this.

Some changes I am thinking of including removing the dagger tree, replacing it with pershaps a special stealth based sling tree (chance to not break stealth, among other effects) perhaps adding a bomb tree for more effects, replacing and reworking some skills and so on. Feedback would be greatly valued.

Cool ideas, I like the throwing knives and the "trickster" angle.

Would you consider making it more magical, though? Then you could do stuff like...
- Alchemical Smoke - use alchemical gem ammo, apply mild poison / confusion / etc. to area; highest talent gives you a smokescreen + teleport effect
- Magical Returning Dagger Trick - costs a bit of mana, creates a missile based on your current dagger(s)
- Diffraction Distraction - use alchemical ammo to create illusions which befuddle foes
Check out my addons: Nullpack (classes), Null Tweaks (items & talents), and New Gems fork.

No, the entire concept is a trickster who only makes it look like he can perform magic, but really only uses illusion and distraction like a stage magician. I was thinking of adding smoke and other bombs, however, since that hardly requires magic to work.

I'm also planning on removing throwing daggers at this point. Cool idea, but aside from actually adding them as a new weapon, it's not an idea that really work that well.

Ah, too bad.

In a world with over five different types of REAL magic, it's probably difficult for "stage magic" to compete.

That may be (read: is clearly) true... but, taking a page from an actual class in ToME, the Wrestler... it seems possible, at least.

The Wrestler doesn't use weapons (by necessity) in a game where every other class uses weapons that eventually get really tough. The Wrestler has to use his own wits, and innate talents, to compete with everything from radical antimagic groups, to rogue archmages, to vampiric necromancers and sociopathic sorcerers. They can't ever wear most armors!

That was, in truth, a small tangent, but the similarities are very present and very real.

As I understand, and you have my apologies catwhowalksbyhimself, if I misinterpret, that the Charlatan is an ordinary resident of Eyal, but one who has witnessed the destructive powers of "magic", in any form. But they know they can't wield such awesome powers. They don't quit, though. They make the best with what they've got, in this case, a bag of tricks and sleight of hand.

They'd need to be quick-thinking, fleet-footed and accurate, sure, but that's one thing they canlearn.

Well, several classes have no inherent magical or magic like abilities. The Charalatan merely exploits the fear of magic for his own gain.

Yeah, pretty much.

I should also point out that while I do take some liberties, this class is mostly based on what real magicians can in fact do. There's one in particular who helped inspire this class that can hand a losing ticket in at the horserace, convince the lady at the desk that it's a winner and cast in ever time. Just by force of will and the way he talks with conviction. I saw a lot of potential there for a ToME class.
