They are not random Steam users. They are steam users that bought Tome, probably nice people and they deserve at least the same access as the people that download the game for free.

Go read the steam user forums for... basically anything. That's all I'm saying. It's fine, though, I can just turn off chat if it comes to that.

Perhaps the Steam users who choose to play a Roguelike will be better company than the ones who enjoy PvP first-person shooters?

I guess we'll see. :)

whoooaaaaa amazing. I never thought this day would come in all honesty. Its been a VERY long time. I'm going to take all the credit and say me hyping ToME up on the Bionic Dues forums a couple weeks ago was the final push we needed to get the greenlight

This is good though, and some nice foreshadowing with the whole harnessing steam power and steamy orcs and all that.

I too am a bit worried about chat as well. Over the past year more and more people have been playing (This is good!) and the chat room has become more and more cluttered. A lot of the time I cant even catch what people say or their cheiveos cause they fly by.

Could we do like some games do when there's a certain number hit (50? 100?) of people within the "default" ToME chat channel it will auto-create a new instance and dump people there.

No problem with more people on chat, but I don't want this to end up like twitch.tv chat where you can't read a single thing because there's so much going on.

Chat becoming too busy would be an issue, but it's hard to segregate people in a sensible way. I certainly wouldn't want there to be a Steam / non-Steam distinction.

Plus, you risk fragmenting the community with 'instances'. You could end up dumped in an instance with folks not interesting in talk, and when you seek advice find none. Or you could end in an instance of nothing but newer players, answering questions repeatedly, but no-one around to discuss higher-level strategy with. I'm not sure that's really the right answer.

Plus, some of us like to follow the progress of certain particular people who run bizarre screwball builds (to successful wins, sometimes). Not being in the same instance would screw that over.

Well if I have to make multiple channels because of too much chat, I'll add the option to switch

Really stoked about this, well deserved. I am constantly impressed by all the hard work that goes into this game (and engine); we know it's a labor of love. I'm also amazed at the genuine community spirit, everyone working together to make this game awesome!

And especially, way to go DG!

First of all - yay to the completely awesome thing. I actually came here from steam because I happened to read it there. Second, I might suggest offering a variety of toggleable specific channels. It's not an entirely trivial change, but I know that there are games that have done it before. things like...
- A Gratz channel, for people who like being congratulated for their achievements and/or congratulating others
- An advice channel for people who like getting or giving advice
- possibly a channel for each power source
...and so on.

This does *NOT* happen.

....Until AFTER we have a 'Magic' and 'Zigurist' Channel. Because let's face it, that's the huge argument the game has. Those of us true believers in the truth of the world, history, and the way things actually ARE, as reflected by fact and logical reasoning, don't want to be in the same universe as those hateful bigoted ignorant unwashed naturist heathens of the Ziguranth. We need a channel to lock them all into so that we never have to see them inflict their hate upon others, or preach their awful propaganda to the foolish.

Then we can have channels for power sources. But only AFTER that.

Heh.

So if you go Antimagic you cannot see messages in the Magic chat.

And the magic crowd gets to throw rotten fruit at you. After all, what else would filthy naturists eat?
