Respec Potion
I didn't see this anywhere when I very casually browsed through. Some other games, such as Torchlight, offered a Respec potion, where the game would refund all stat/class points back to the player for redistribution. I was playing an Oozemancer and thought that some of the summoning aspect would be a great idea. Turns out that I wanted to try a melee option. Only problem was that I was already several dungeons in and somewhat heavily invested in those summoning aspects.
A respec potion would be the solution to this. Allows you to fully refund all class and generic talent points, as well as stat points. Could be implemented in a few different ways. Have them be sellable at some absurd price. Have a dude in a house somewhere offer to do it, but his cost rises exponentially each time. Could also make it like the Blood of Life and have it be a unique drop.
If I missed something here, or if there's an Add-on that does this, let me know.

Re: Respec Potion
Nope. No respec potions in roguelike, please. Maybe in adventure mode (who the hell plays adventure mode anyways) or there might be some addon for this.

Re: Respec Potion
There isn't, and I understood it was balance reasons... But there isn't a reason it couldn't be managed somehow. I'm against the 'multiple use' option, even with rising costs. Ideally, I think a one-off, through sidequest/lucky artifact drop is the best solution.
The hazard here, is that it might provide a significant gain to builds making heavy use of escort trees, or purchased staff/mindstar/etc trees. Or even just 'tough to get off the ground builds, that can get bvetter use out of points in other places later on'. (I can think of a few of those, involving rogues, arcane blades, doomed, cursed, and a few others...)
On the other hand.... this would make exotics more viable. Can find the talent on an escort, and lategame when you find the weapons you need to use with it, respec away from weapon mastery into exotic mastery.
As for where to get the potion, a guaranteed drop in existing mid-lategame dungeon would do... Ruined dungeon vault, elven ruins, doomed crypt... Thoughts?

Re: Respec Potion
I don't think I'd ever use it.
Its so easy to just make a new character to try something different.
And unlike many other games, it doesn't take ages to get whatever you want to try off the ground.
This isn't the sort of game where you get attached to a character and want to keep it forever, but want to switch abilities around to make it more interesting/optimised.

Re: Respec Potion
I would totally use this. Not often, sure, but it would make a few games much more interesting.
Example: "Hmm, what direction should I go with this Archmage? Why not Wildfire..."
-> Hat of Arcane Understanding
-> Staff of Arcane Supremacy
-> Vestments of the Conclave
... no Fire artifacts at all ...

Re: Respec Potion
Okay, so the multiple use option was an example I picked up from Half-Minute Hero and probably won't work here. But I still think that it could be a valuable tool for those of us who screw up on a build. It shouldn't be that hard for the system to only refund the points that you personally sunk into it, so anything that you got from escort quests and whatnot shouldn't be affected.
And it was such a good idea...

Re: Respec Potion
Was referring to the way you could pick an escort tree up late, respec, and dump a bunch of points into the tree, rather then shenanigans involving an extra stat/talent point.
I rather like the idea of just placing it some side dungeon, with a current low priority. Any of the places I recommended sound like appropriate game areas to do that in?

Re: Respec Potion
It would probably work best if it was either unreliable to have exist, or extremely expensive.
Otherwise, people would do earlygame oriented builds and respec.
I almost am tempted to suggest it as an alchemist final reward, except that it's honestly way better than their current final rewards.

Re: Respec Potion
I would probably find use for such item on each my chars, but it's really powerful, so it'd have to be absurdly rare drop and by absurdly rare I mean something people have heard rumors of but no one has actually seen one.
Maybe make it so that it has a negative side, maybe subtract 5 attribute points and 2 talent points when used our something asking those lines.

Stronk is a potent combatant with a terrifying appearance.
Re: Respec Potion
Could hide it in the Ancient Elven Ruins and have it make you undead as well.
Potion of "New Life".

Re: Respec Potion
I could see it *perhaps* as an option for "exchange all your alchemist pots for that potion". Perhaps.
Big caveat.
(It woulnt respec thigns you cant respec now anyway)

Re: Respec Potion
Hell, the easy way to fix those escort shenanigans is to have the potion respec you back to Level 1 stats. Basically, anything that you had open at Level 1 would be there, but nothing else would. This would also mean resetting any purchased trees.
And it was such a good idea...

Re: Respec Potion
Make it a reward for siding with the Assassin Lord, that is an expensive choice and currently quite useless (unless you're a Stealth guy).
Also put a line in that character's sheet "This character used the Respec Potion."

Re: Respec Potion
Assassin lord is Waaaay too easy. I'd be more inclined to make it something you could luck into, like Blood of Life, if anything. You wouldn't be able to predict it or depend on it, it would just show up some games and let you make a new choice. I agree with the returning to lvl 1 blank slate. Alternately, make it the reward for doing something ridiculously difficult - like once the Oozemancer dungeon scaling is in place, triggering every wall and killing every enemy in the oozemancer dungeon. Maybe it could be a guaranteed drop off of Linallil. Something like that.
Re: Respec Potion
Heck, combine this kind of shenanigans-allowed-but-with-a-point-penalty-each-time ability with the extra cat point and you have the new Cornac racial.Mayfair wrote: Maybe make it so that it has a negative side, maybe subtract 5 attribute points and 2 talent points when used or something along those lines.
