Allow crystal focus to interface with a shield.

#1 Post by Crim, The Red Thunder »

Stone wardens use shields as their primary means of physical offense. Allow us to put crystal focus on a shield, so they can take advantage of crystal set as well. Doesn't seem too unusual.

Idea is pursuant to this conversation here: http://forums.te4.org/viewtopic.php?p=162992#p162992

I dig it.

This could be useful for anyone with the Shield Offense tree.
Check out my addons: Nullpack (classes), Null Tweaks (items & talents), and New Gems fork.

Launchers would be nice, too. (Slings/Bows.)

It already works with gloves.

If it works with gloves, maybe it already works and shields and we havnt tried? Otherwise, this is a brilliant idea from a wise dwarf with an amazing beard, probably.

How about mindstars?

It only works with gloves and normal weapons, from the code.

I think it's not so much that it's a bad idea, so much that no one has bothered doing the special code. The base setup for Crystal Focus just doesn't lend its self well to launchers, it needs a somewhat different property set. And shields were so rarely used in combat before Stone Warden was finalized that no one thought of it. (Or thought it mattered, one of those.)

Mindstars weren't coded into the game until long after Crystal Focus, so that's why there. Though I am inclined to suspect a Mindstar is more likely to explode from getting an arcane artifact shoved in it, than anything.

Stone wardens successfully combine nature with magic without exploding into heretical flame, so I have no issue with a mindstar that has focus on it, though how many builds could use it is another question. Since someone MIGHT, it should be added. (If nothing else, it provides mind classes a reason NOT to go antimagic.)

And I'd really love to see a ranged combat version as well. Let archers in on the fun!

Agreed. I'd like the crystal focus to 1) work and 2) work on mindstars, shields and maybe ranged too.

Crystal Focus on Mindstars:

Mindstars are explicitly called "gems" in their general description, but I see no reason a sufficiently inclined being couldn't turn it into one.

Perhaps an AM could "purge" the magic from it, and foster natural growth, while a non-AM just skips the arcane purging?

Anyway, I've added the ability to add the focus to mindstars, ranged weapons and shield in the Arcanum addon.
It also fixes the current bug of those gems being unusable.

I would argue that it shouldn't be AM-usable, even if it is usable on mindstars (and I'm not all that in favor of that). Part of the point of AM is that you lose out on a lot of gear that you could otherwise use, and the Crystal Focus is one of the bigger, brighter examples of the gear you lose out on (and I say this as someone who plays AM more often than not).
