allows you to control the escort a little

Really, anything would help. Escorts will happily stand in the spiraling ice shards dieing while you try to fight Wrathroot and be otherwise blatantly suicidal and there's nothing you can do about it.

An Escort of mine walked into a moat and drowned. I didn't have Teleport or Phase Door, so I couldn't save her from her apparent deathwish.

Proof that all these drowning deaths in towns are suicides. Definitely not the fault of any wandering players.
