Help about horrors
I'm new to the Tome game, and I've only got to far east once, but I need help about something.90% of my games have been ended by the elite-level horrors, and I'd like to know methods that people often use to kill them.I normally play as the wyrmic(fungus class FTW) but even with that, it doesn't saves my ass from nightmare horrors, radiant horrors and dreaming horrors. All of these monsters were found in the West(radiant horror in dreadfell, nightmare horror in the ruined version of the maze, and dreaming horror in the ruined dungeon), and I found that such creatures are potentially game-ending, and the nightmare and dreaming horrors are extremely difficult to flee from.
I'll admit, I do have difficult on noticing when a fight is unwinnable, but it is extremely hard to even get close to killing any of these three monsters.

Re: Help about horrors
Dreaming horrors are more or less fine, if have sleep immunity (from the Eye of Dreaming One or Lucid dreamer) and good sources of burst damage. Willpower-focused wyrmic without at least couple of breaths suck against them. If you don't have sleep immunity, run for your life.
Radiant horrors aren't that bad actually. Just don't melee them, hit & run a lot and quickly run away after exhausting all healing talents.
No idea, how to deal with nightmare horrors. They are nightmarish, so you may just run away from them as well
Don't remember, which of horrors have healing talents, but just in case always get Healing nexus early - it is rarely needed, but can be totally lifesaving, when fighting against poison-resistant randbosses/uniques.

Re: Help about horrors
Don't feel bad, horrors are the nastiest stuff outside of rares and bosses, and they're definitely scarier propositions than weak versions of the latter.
Nightmare and Dreaming Horrors are a bit overpowered in my opinion, the best way to deal with them is to run and avoid 'em. If you do go up against them, having a torque of clear mind ready might help (a mental wild will only help in escaping). Ideally, come back later when you are overleveled and crush them for a great big victory rush.
Radiant horrors are easier, stunning them early can put their Providence on CD. If that fails, forget about status effects, get out all your damage dealing talents stat (except anything doing fire or light damage, that heals them) and hope they do the trick. If not, run away, try again or avoid, depending on how close you came to killing it.
If we're talking luminous horrors, those always come in three. Similar to the above, try and lure them around corners so you aren't in view to all three, concentrate on taking out one, then flee and rest and take the other two. Loading up on light and fire resist gear is also good, they don't do statuses so you can scimp there.

Re: Help about horrors
It's worth noting that Dreaming horrors won't actually attack you first; you find them in a "sleeping" state. If you attack, it will wake up and destroy you. So just try to ignore them. They will spawn "dream seeds" as they sleep, which make resting difficult on that level as they will attack you, but they aren't nearly as bad as their mother.
Never met a Nightmare horror before, but from what I've heard you should just run away as fast as you can and never return.

Re: Help about horrors
Dreaming Horror: In general, you'll find one asleep(unless it's gotten its self damaged some weird way). In this case, you can often just go around it. No point in trying to take it on head on unless you really want.
If you're in combat with one, there are two big things to worry about; Maelstrom and Dreamscape. If you're at close range, Dreamscape becomes kinda nasty luckfest at earlier levels(Later level characters can usually handle a Dreaming), but fortunately it shouldn't last long enough to be fatal alone-if you need to get into melee range, heal up first, and if you get actions in Dreamscape(You usually do, but some frail setups caught flat may not) try to teleport/movement infusion your clones as far as you can from each other, to minimize Maelstrom/Distortion Bolt damage.
Maelstrom, as mentioned, is the other issue. If you're hit with that, get out of it. Right now. Do not wait a bit, it's not doing much damage, sure, but being in it will kill you because it's constantly Distorting you.
Nightmare Horror: Do not fight unless you have a way to lift Mental status, as a general rule, or have high enough Mental Save to at least match its Mindpower(unlikely) or good Fear resistance(also unlikely).
Most of its tricks are just decent, but Inner Demons is a potential game-ender even after repeated nerfs. If you really have to fight it without those, either have very, very good damage and a way to get to point blank very fast(for melee), or stay at a range higher than 7(not as hard to do as it sounds).
These guys are a lot more manageable after you get Relentless Pursuit, if you have decent Mindsave at all; Usually that knocks most of the duration out of Inner Demons, and you tend to end up with one copy tops.
Radiant Horror: Don't just sit and slugfest these guys. They're durable to a crazy degree, but they rely it on high levels of defensive skills and tend to kill you by stacking Circle of Blazing Light+Searing Light for a lot of damage over time if you don't move.
Try to do a fast strike of debilitating status(Stun and Confusion both work), and pile on damage; If it works, great, it's probably dead. If not, due to Providence popping up, just run away until you get another crack at the status.
It's possible to just have enough damage to overcome them, too, and a really tanky class(like Sun Paladin) can often just sit and slugfest them, despite what I said...just not much fun, be careful with tanks vs Radiant Horrors. (They get a stun anyways, though...)

Re: Help about horrors
Luminous horrors get my Silver Trophy for simply-annoying baddie, albeit a long second from the Gold-plated Gold Cup which goes to wretchlings. Yes, that contributes pretty much nothing to the discussion, but I've been having trouble logging in and just wanted to type a little

Re: Help about horrors
In addition to what everyone else has said, one thing to remember is that most horrors aren't actually all that durable. The radiant horrors are annoying because they heal regularly while simultaneously damaging you, but if you're willing to hit hard and quick, they can be taken down without too much effort. The main issue is that radiants are frequently found in certain kinds of vaults, and these are tougher. In a similar vein, the weakest of these horrors, luminous horrors, aren't too hard to deal with if you time things properly. They erect shields predictably, and one of their two main attacks is confined to the square where it landed. So keep moving (avoiding LoS when possible, because their other main attack is a beam) until their shields expire, then close the gap quickly and slam them hard. If you don't take them out before they erect a shield again, repeat, trying to minimize the time between attacks so they can't heal too much. A wyrmic should be competent enough with weapons to pull this off reliably.
Of course, you can always use breath weapons to speed up the process, either by inflicting more damage or by eating up their shield. Just don't use fire, heh. Unfortunately, that's often the first one people build up, for obvious reasons.
Obviously, this all assumes you're not dealing with a rare. A rare horror can be...horrific. Unless you're extremely confident, and I'm guessing that you're not, given that you started this thread, run. Run. Run.

Re: Help about horrors
Another thing to note about luminous horrors is that they're healed by fire and light, so when the two behind shoot their firebeams through the one you're fighting... yes, they are healing it. Which is why corners and are really useful here.

Huh. Would you believe I never thought of that part of fighting them?jotwebe wrote:Another thing to note about luminous horrors is that they're healed by fire and light, so when the two behind shoot their firebeams through the one you're fighting... yes, they are healing it. Re: Help about horrors
I've only realized it a couple of weeks ago, myself. Sure, I'd realized that killing them with fire myself was not working and in fact counterproductive long ago, but for some reason I never made the connection.
Until one of them regenerated a truly prodiguous amount after a barrage from its friends, and I had a "waaaait a minute" moment.

Vault? The answer to this is "don't open the vaults". I know it's tempting as hell. You can probably open them after you come back from the East.sadisticnerd wrote:radiant horror in dreadfell
