Before the change that made all non-artifact and most artifact charms need to be equipped for use, the tool slot was for diggers and a very small number of misc artifact (prox's foot and thats it IIRC). Now, you need it for charms, but then to dig you have to switch to a digger and back afterwards. This is intensely annoying and kinda pointless, given that there are very few scenarios where digging and using a charm are both viable options. It also just feels odd that a pickaxe and a torque or totem would be mutually exclusive.
I assume that there a reason I am not seeing to not do this, and that there was a reason that equippable charms weren't given their own slot when implemented.
Separate item slots for diggers and charms

Re: Separate item slots for diggers and charms
Would work better to just allow diggers to dig from inventory.
That way, you don't have to worry about having two slots for tools, both of which can potentially add stats. Not that this would necessarily be that big of a deal, per se...

Re: Separate item slots for diggers and charms
Thats a possible solution. The problem from my perspective with it is that +stat diggers are FAR more common than +stat charms, so there isn't a balance issue from the additional slot outside of artifacts. However, the stat boosts from diggers aren't nearly enough to pass up charms, even when comparing the blue and purple diggers to green charms. When artifacts get involved, its a joke. So the only valuble diggers are +digspeed, if you're not gonna equip the diggers, then the only egos you want are the ones that boost dig speed. Are there even +stat charms outside of rares, randarts and fixedarts?SageAcrin wrote:Would work better to just allow diggers to dig from inventory.

As it stands now, the charms are so useful that the +stats on diggers aren't that good in general, and the better artifact charms are AMAZING. Telekinetic Core, anyone? Yeah, its an arti, but it makes The Tooth of The Mouth look like an absolute joke. I was still running TK Core on my wyrmic when I had t4 and t5 stuff most everywhere else.
Re: Separate item slots for diggers and charms
I'll certainly agree that digger-swapping is an annoyance. With the exception of Tooth of the Mouth (which is a nice early-game boost, but doesn't do a whole lot after that) the buffs that I get from diggers are basically meaningless. Sure, if I have nothing else to put there, I'll put in a digger that gives me 8% nature resist, but it's just not that significant. When I use diggers, it's invariably non-time-critical. If there were any enemies around that needed killing, I'd have better things to do with my time than hack at a wall for 10 or more turns. As such, the primary cost to digging for me is that I have to equip the digger, activate it (because it usually doesn't deserve a slot on my hotbar, especially if it's generally unequipped), and then (assuming I remember) swap back to the tool that I actually want to be using.
So... I'd be a fan of giving them their own slot (or in some other way removing the slot-swap aspect), and I'd also love to see some keyboard shortcut for tunneling that didn't *have* to sit on the hotbar (like the old T key).
Also, is there any way to turn off the huge mouse slowdown that kicks in whenever you're targeting? If not, could we add one?

Re: Separate item slots for diggers and charms
I second the motion for T digs the selected wall with your fastest digger in inventory. Also can we get the quick melee targeting on a digger to not need the enter key confirmation when arrowing towards a wall.
No need for an actual new slot.
