How do people get to level 50?

#1 Post by Throckmorton »

The big sparkly sun-guy in the Gates of Morning just told me to take the slime tunnels to a peak. I've never played this far, but it sounds like I'm approaching the end of the game. How come I'm not level 50 yet? Or even close. I don't want revealing spoilers. Just let me know if I need to reach 50 and if I'm far enough from the end that I will gain that much experience on the way?

I've talked to everyone in Gates of Morning and there seems to be no more side quests. right?

You'll typically reach level 50 before reaching the end of the game. Unless you are *trying* to not be level 50.

I'm not trying to finish before 50, i'm trying to win. So at level 38 I'm ready to enter the slime tunnel and proceed? Meaning that there are 12 or more levels worth of experience between me and winning? I guess that's what i really need to know.

Have you done the following:
1. Back in the west, searched through the old dungeons for backup guardian bosses?
2. Travelled in the far portal to level up?
3. The side quests of the Crypt, Orc Mother Hive, Ancient Elven Ruins, etc?

regarding #1, WHAT?? the "west" dungeons repopulate? I never noticed this - they seem empty upon re-entering. Did something I did unlock "re-population" in the west? No NPCs have said anything about this*.

#2 I know about farportals. But I reasoned that this game couldn't be set up such that you must use farportals for 12 character levels. #1 seems more fun.

*Shouldn't there be some kind of "sub-plot" indication that there are new things to kill back in the west? How should my character have found out about this??

NPCs in the towns drop hints.

The dungeon will be as you left it, except there will be a new boss somewhere.

experience penalty can also contribute to not being 50 at the end game, I've had a few Thalore who were 42ish at High Peak.

Some of it is randomness. If you get a lot of vaults packed with enemies you will level a bit faster. Some dungeons like the Caldera and the new ooze place don't always show up.

High Peak itself can also be good for a few levels, it's long and the enemies are quite high level, so getting another 2-4 levels in there is likely.

In addition to the farportals you can also farm adventurer parties or orc patrols, though I think farportals have better loot.

There are a number of optional dungeons, and if you're only level 40 you almost certainly missed some of them.

In the west: Celia/Graveyard; Spellblaze; ruined dungeon; elven ruins.
In the east: orc broodmother; damp cave.

Any of these would be worth a level. There is also the east encounter where you meet yourself, but I forget the name...

If you enter at about 46 you'll hit 50 by the end. If you don't, you won't.

there are hints in towns in west. Probably too subtle though.

I think it would be hard to find these bosses without some guidance. So look at wiki, backup guardians. One is very important and two are very dangerous. Dwarves have an additional boss for good measure.

Usually, you will not get to level 50 until AFTER (or mid) final fight. Both final bosses give huge amount of experience, enough to get those 3-6 final levels.

Doing all of the side quests gets me to level 50 before High Peak (usually in the last or penultimate pride) for low or moderate exp penalty characters like Highers.

If you're playing a class with an XP bonus, it's easy to make it to 50. Play a Cornac something, you'll be fifty. Play Yeek something, you'll be fifty.

If you're playing something else, a bit of grinding is in order, if you want to reach 50 before High Peak. Which is really the safest way to do it-- Farportal randoms are less dangerous than High Peak randoms, maybe just in my experience, and you can always sacrifice the Rod if you have to.
