Hi, I'm new to ToME and I love the game and its great concepts and setting, also some very good writing. A quick question about something that's irritating me so far.
I've lost a few characters to simple carelessness and I'd like to know if there's a setting or macro I can use to give me something like the game requiring a typed confirmation for taking any action if under a certain % of health e.g. 'Warning - low health, confirm action with 'yes'', and then I having to type that in to continue. This would fire any time my health dropped below a certain point, but I wouldn't have to confirm for every single action below that health mark, just something to draw my attention to dangerous situations.
I play on roguelike only, and it's really (really) annoying to lose my best character yet (lvl 29 lich) to just hitting the arrow keys a couple of extra times when I didn't notice I was taking heavy damage. Was just a few normal ranged monsters who would have been no threat whatsoever had I been paying attention. It's easy to do if you're breezing through an area otherwise. Some might find having to concentrate all the time part of the fun, but in my view in a turn-based roguelike you should be punished/rewarded for tactical decisions, not reflexes or continual awareness of your HUD like a FPS. Dying would be much more bearable if I could attribute it to a tactical error.
Any help very much appreciated. Thanks a lot.
Settings/Macros to prevent very avoidable deaths?

Re: Settings/Macros to prevent very avoidable deaths?
the z button (autoexplore) stops movement when you take damage, alerting you to it. Also, you should never ever 'just hit an arrow key a few extra times'. That's a pretty basic rule for every roguelike I think.
Re: Settings/Macros to prevent very avoidable deaths?
Not only that, but auto-explore stops you as soon as you see an enemy - this should never happen. If, in combat, you press the arrow keys too many times, then try using the mouse to move instead. Can't mess that up.
Also you should consider playing on adventure, where you're actually allowed to make mistakes.

Not really related, but on the topic of "press the keys too many times".
This happens to me constantly during escort service. I kill all monsters around the portal, and then I keep left-clicking on me until the escort (which is a bit slow) is finally getting on the portal. Ever so frequently, I clicked a bit too much and one of these clicks chose for me a reward I didn't want.

I've developed a habit of switching to keyboard movement while waiting for escorts for this exact reason.Nimmy wrote:Not really related, but on the topic of "press the keys too many times".

This happened to me a couple times! And I hate it!Nimmy wrote:Not really related, but on the topic of "press the keys too many times".

When I get an escort I tend to play slowly to avoid this. But sometimes when escort gets on the portal in the middle of a fight I get a reward I didn't want.
Re: Settings/Macros to prevent very avoidable deaths?
The Valley of the Moon quest is pretty much the worst in this respect - every now and then you have to click just in order to pass time, and woe betide you (or well, Limnir. The point stands though) should you click faster than the game can update the turn count.

Shift+B disables bump attack - good for the caster types that never want to melee.
