[1.01] Dying in Ring of Blood can kill your character

Having the slave brawler in the arena die has also taken hit points off my actual character before, and most recently has actually killed my character. Not sure if this is intended or not. If it isn't, is there any way I can recover my character? I was playing on roguelike difficulty but didn't think I would succumb to a bug.
