Creating Tileset

#1 Post by malignatius »

Hi,
I'm new to this game but I've already reckoned that ToME has lots of potential.
...Not really fond of the default tileset though.

I'm a designer and I've just started drawing my first tiles, I have however no clue how to proceed or how I could test my graphics.
Heck, I'm not even sure that I'm posting in the right forum!

Is there a guide for designers or someone who could give some hints on how to go ahead?

I should probably mention that I'm on a mac, if that makes a difference.

You might examine Daftigod's oldprg tileset addon, since it added it's own set of graphics. Ought to point you in the right direction, if you're trying to change the default tome tiles. If you're making your own whole separate game, that's another issue.

Thanks. I'll try the oldrpg tileset and see if I can figure it out from there. My ambition is first to just create the tiles, and perhaps later, if it works out fine, try to find someone to collaborate on a new module. We'll see :-)

Yeah checkout oldrpg; basically you make a very simple addon that has your own tiles named exactly as the existing ones

Can you post examples of what you did BTW ?

So... Here's a screenshot with the general style I'm going for. Vector Based, quite rough, classic RPG style. (The screenshot is about 200%, the original tiles i 64x64)
Iv'e got about 30 characters/monsters drawn and few more dungeon tiles too.

Thanks for the kind words!
I had a look at the OldRPG set now and I've tried to understand how to go on, but to be honest, I don't see myself making an module on my own.
Perhaps I was naive, but I imagined making a tileset would be as easy as changing one .png for another.
Installing Libraries, SDK's and compiling files that's really not my thing. I draw stuff.

I'll continue working in the tiles, and when I'm closer to some kind of completion I might try to find someone to help me out.

but but tome-oldrpg.teaa is just a zip file containing png. There is nothing more, no SDK, no library to compile, nothing. Just unzip tome-oldrpg.teaa, change the files you want (you also want to change the file init.lua but it's self-explanatory), zip it again to say mynewmodule.teaa (change the extension so that it is teaa) and then put it in the addons directory in your installation of tome. That's it. It is really easy.

This is the starter guide I've been searching for! It might seem obvious for someone more experienced, but I have zero experience with these things.

I really like the looks of this! Color me intrigued. What's the pressure-plate looking square thing near the belt, a trap? And where does the gate get used, I thought there was only one kind of door?

Holy hell that looks awesome. Seriously if you get this finished I will be all over it. I love that it still very much has a old school gritty rpg feel to it yet also a more modern cell shaded sort of look. Seriously two thumbs up.
