nightmare thalore wyrmic (R.I.P.) level 20

#1 Post by wyzzarrdd »

In my ongoing quest to beat nightmare with a melee I decided to give wyrmic another try. My plan was to go 2 hander to take advantage of berserker stun resists. Also going 2 hander takes the most advantage of wyrmic melee abilities which multiply weapon damage and death dance is very powerful at even 1 point (and just gets better).

The early game went without issues. I didn't max bellowing roar because the damage doesn't scale very well and adding points doesn't increase the CC.

First death was to stupid derth lightning elementals. Rounded corner and got popped for 400 damage by 3 casts, 1 crit.

Remaining deaths came from sher'tul fortress farportal room keeper. It was a reaver luminous horror boss and of course the lumies never travel alone. I assumed I would have to sacrifice 1 life to kill the companions and was willing to make the trade. I killed the 2 normal buddies on on the first life then attempted the boss. He was basically untouchable. He was immune to blind and confusion was pushed off with a 9 turn providence. Since he had corrupted strength he got a melee attack for each shield, heal, providence, searing light, fire lance, drain, etc he cast. The melee totalled to ~250 alone not counting spell damage. In addition I had diseases ticking. And in addition to this for some reason his defense was high enough that I missed a lot. Including one dissolve where I missed all 4 swings. After losing the 2 lives I tried to run but pacification hex brought me down. Managed to get to the portal but it wouldn't let me exit with burning hex on me. He used blood lock fairly effectively to keep me below 200hp and killed me after rounding the corner with a crit searing light. Since I figured the game was over anyway I charged and between my 4th(5th?) life and blood of life I got him down to 200 but missing a death dance meant I didn't get the kill.

Not sure what I could have done differently other than just run.

Lessons learned: Sand Breath ended up doing about 200 damage at level 5 with 15% physical damage boost. That is nowhere near enough damage for the equilibrium and cooldown to be considered a "primary" attack. Lightning speed is pretty crappy considering it costs a turn to use and its broken by autocasting. Swallow is a very decent ability at 1 point and just requires a bit of attention to use optimally. I didn't feel that not maxing bellowing roar hurt me a bit. The cooldown is much too long to rely on it for damage and the CC is the same at 1 point. My fungus tree ended up 1/1/3/1 because I put my generics into weapon skills. Not sure if more fungus would have helped vs my last fight, doubt it.

You might want to work on beating nightmare with a non-melee first so that you understand when to do things a bit better. For instance, I wouldn't do Derth until level 20 (Kill all townspeople + all T1 + all T2 + lumberjack gets you there) and wouldn't do the Farportal guardian until I had +5 levels on it (or even more if it was something like what you got). Actually, I wouldn't even do Lake Nur that early, I'd start Nur at either lvl20 or after Urkris depending on how hard I thought the Urkris fight would be.
