1) They're random. You can't change your playstyle and naturally receive x amount of damage by level 30.
2) They're super easy to farm. Find a Faeros/Ghoul/Gwaeloth and heal away.
3) Doing so is risk free done right. This makes the requirement pointless and boring.

It depends what prodigies are meant to be. Currently they're something you can easily work toward,, especially that you can get +50 to most stats from equipped items or tricks like Heroism. But some prodigies are only available if character witnesses something. For example, meteor, or killing a monster while being below 0 hp.
As for damage requirements - yes, pure grind.
