Blood of Life

#1 Post by Valishan »

I suspect I already know the answer to this, but I'm asking anyway just in case.

Found the blood of life (obviously), and upon using it I get this message: The Blood of Life seems to have no effect on you.

Is this because (like an idiot) I used the Blood of Life while still wearing the Unlife belt (treated as undead) I picked up for Nur and never bothered to replace? If so, is there anything I can do to get that extra life now or is it just lost to my own stupidity?

Ouch, yeah, has no effect on undead :( There's no way of getting it now.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Sad to hear, but I'm not terribly upset. At least I learned this lesson on a character that I didn't have high hopes for anyway.

That's such an easy mistake to make. I would've never even considered it. Ouch.

Does the Blood affect Demons? If so, the axe of whatshisname just got more interesting..

I was about to start a new thread then saw this and figured I might as well ask here: What effect does lichform have on a previously consumed Blood of Life? (For that matter, what effect does an item with "treated as undead" flag have on the working of a Blood of Life? Will it still activate if you're a lich or if you're wearing such an item when you're killed?

Lichform specifically has a little flag (and message) where it nullifies the effect of Blood of Life.

"treated as undead" items use a much weaker form of undeath-it's mostly relevant for Retch and Bathe in Light. Since it doesn't go out of its way to purge Blood of Life, you should still be fine if you wear it while under its effects.

Just, Blood of Life doesn't bother to check your race or anything, just the undeath flag...so it works like that if you chug it while wearing the undeath items. Bit strange, but essentially makes sense if you think of "Undead" as a flag separate from many of the other effects of undeath, like no infusions...

I suggest making the blood check your race (and the special lich flag) rather than your current undead flag. Losing it because you were forgetful with your equipment just seems annoying.

Sure, it's easy to avoid, but in general I think ToME tries to avoid fiddly stuff like having you rearrange your equipment just to safely use a particular (permanent) powerup. If it were an amulet of life-saving (so you had to choose between having it or being undead at any given time) it'd make sense for the incompatibility to be maintained, but I don't think it adds anything given that it's a potion.

Thanks for the information. While I'm here, does anyone know what happens to extant Wild Gift talents when you take lichform? I've only done it once, for the experience of having done so, so I don't recall much about the effects.

Edit: Seems Wild Gifts are unaffected by lichform. Perhaps this should be changed in the next version? If you can't get them as undead from the start, one assumes they'd be incompatible with achieving lichhood.
