I love the chests and the chance to get a great out of depth item. I was thinking it might be cool if there were different types of chests with different potentials for items and risk of potential guardians.
Something like "Ancient Wooden Chest" "Rune Covered Iron Chest" "Golden Glowing Chest" and "Levitating Diamond studded Chest"
The wooden chest would have likely have a decent item, but pretty low chance of a boss that is going to one shot you. The iron chest have better loot, but definitely some risk associated with opening it. The Golden one is dangerous, but you might be able to handle it-- you feeling lucky? The Diamond Chest would be really dangerous and something you should probably just walk away from, but is so tempting for the goodies that are probably inside.

Re: Different Quality of Chests
I seldom feel any threat from the existing chests, unless I find one in the undead starter, or something. By the time I start finding them, I usually kill anything nearby and then pop the chest for the loot, boss or no boss. Having some more 'robust' dangerous chests, though with commensurate kinds of rewards could be a very interesting idea, but lets not lower the chance of rares popping on low quality chests. Certainly shouldn't be able to view wood chests as 'gimme' loot, given that the existing chests hold a minimal threat, from my opinion.

I was thinking that the lower level chests would also be more common that chests currently are and while not gimme loot, not super dangerous/super rewarding either. Maybe the wooden chests would be a bit less less dangerous and have a lower percentage chance for a rare/artifact than the current ones. The higher level chests would be more rare based on their type and have more risk/reward respectively.Crim, The Red Thunder wrote:...but lets not lower the chance of rares popping on low quality chests. I don't think we want to have too many chest like objects on each map, but I think a bit more than what we have now would be fun. Especially if you could bias their generation to be more likely in rooms.

The funny thing is you often get better loot off the rares guarding the chests than the treasures inside.
