Roguelike Radio ep on T-Engine modules

#1 Post by Grey »

I'm looking to record a Roguelike Radio episode on making games in the T-Engine. DarkGod and I have arranged a recording time of 8pm GMT this Wednesday. Anyone else with experience of module creation able to participate?

Just to be clear, this is about making wholly separate games in the T-Engine, not about development of ToME or add-ons (though ToME will certainly be discussed).

I can be there but I'll have my kid and my wife will be in school so I'd be a bit distracted.

I have a meeting that start about 30 minutes before the currently scheduled time. If we can postpone by 30-45 minutes I will be able to find a quiet place and set up. Cheers!
<DarkGod> lets say it's intended

I can postpone 30 mins (or more if desired). DarkGod, what say thee?

Distraction is fine, edge, as long as you have a mute button :)

And have earphones and preferably half decent mics and a quiet atmosphere. (Yes, I'm fussy :P )

Do you guys have a list of topics you intend to cover?

Since I won't be there to plug it, be sure to mention the most awesome and flexible FoV algorithm (it can be symmetric AND have single pillars cast continuous shadows (good for gameplay!) OR behave like Digital FoV OR be asymmetric like the original shadowcasting algorithm OR... etc :) ).

Also hex. T-Engine can do hexagonal games.

Much of the audience probably won't know Lua, so definitely mention it is accessible and easy to learn. It is by far the easiest language that I've learned. If somebody knows Python (or other high level language), picking up Lua should be a cinch.

*edit* Also that some modules are available at https://gitorious.org/t-engine-modules . Why not github.com? Dunno. Maybe more modules could be put on github too (Gene Revolution is there, but hasn't been touched in a while: https://github.com/TE4-Module-Developer ... Revolution)

Heh, how could I fail to mention hex? I requested it :P

Some areas I'd like to cover:
- Mention of ToME winning RL of the year (yet again)
- What reaching v1.0 means for the engine
- Modules made to date, or in development
- Module contest
- How DarkGod got started making the engine, including past history with older engines
- Features of engine, flexibility etc
- Particles effects, wazzoo!
- Documentation (or lack thereof)
- Community support
- Common problems starting up
- Tips and tricks
- Limitations of the engine
- Tips for others wanting to make a roguelike engine from scratch (beyond "don't do it")

Great, sounds like a good (if possibly long) episode ;)

Hum, I wonder if there would be a sensible way to do a "T-Engine Documentation Contest". I bet a few prizes of 200€ or 100€ or even less would go a long way towards fleshing out useful documentation and guides!

My Skype id is darrenjohngrey by the way.

Would help if we all have some experience with a few modules that have been made. A list of the fully playable ones I know:

ToME (duh)
Broken Bottle
Run from the Shadow
Harrowed
sick peter
Broody Vole
F*** This Jam
Bone Builder
phage
Blood Arbiter
Hellfire
BOB

Others in dev:
Rogue Rage
Gene Revolution
That JRPG one
Runic
ToME2 port
Fae

Any I've missed? Also, this list clearly shows I make too many T-Engine games :P

You missed the long forgotten "Viral Resistance"--maybe my mentioning it will encourage more development :) :

Aha, I had forgotten about "sick peter". You are truly twisted, Darren ;)

My Skype username is sean.osman and I would be honored to be in on this.

Ooh, what about CrimeRL or Crimelike or whatever you wanna call it? That's a juicy one you missed. Done by Bay13'ers I believe.
