Blue Screen of Death on entering the Old Forest

#1 Post by shinu »

As said in topic: cornac bulwark, level 9. Upon entering the old forest, I walked about 5-10 turns, when my netbook (acer aspire one, with winXP) showed a blue screen of death and rebooted itself. Now, every time I try to load that character, it loads in the same location (obviously) and a couple of seconds later, the computer reboots again.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Ouch! What graphics card do you have? And are your drivers at their latest version?

You could try turning off shaders in the video options.

It's the intel mobile 945, and yes, I have the latest drivers (not difficult,as the last update came out in 2008 :) )

Already tried disabling shaders, as well as the other video options, and the BSOD is still appearing, but thanks anyway.

The game worked without a glitch until now, graphical or otherwise

I have uploaded the savegame to http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?9ffhadcqimqjvv7

If you turn off the automatic reboot on BSOD, you might be able to see what's causing the problem. Turn it off by:
  1. Right-click on My Computer
  2. Select Properties
  3. Click the Advanced tab
  4. Click the Settings button in the "Startup and Recovery" section
  5. Uncheck the "Automatically restart" box under "System failure"
  6. Hit OK
That way you can read the BSOD. It could be bad memory, a hard drive failure, video problems, or some service you didn't know about freaking out. ToME might just be exposing an underlying problem.

Caveat: The steps above assume an English install of Windows.

It's almost certainly an issue with the video chip. Are there really no drivers since 2008? :/ That's painfully old!

Another thing, you mention it's a portable machine. Were you running on battery or the mains when the crash happened? If your battery is old and worn out it could be undervoltage which would cause any number of problems when the system is stressed.

I had a BSOD issue in the Old Forest a while ago. I found that disabling weather effects solved it, though only on subsequent saves - at the time a zone's graphics settings were fixed the first time you walked in. Is that still the case?
