I'm all for the idea of ASCII avatars, if they are used at all. My net access is slow enough as it is, thanks to all those blessed people downloading all that music/etc. (Grrr.)
I'm just picking on them I don't know the source of the congestion, but it's a fact that there are times of day when I can't even get to major websites, and it's not a lack of dialups.
Whatever, I still think a roguelike deserves ASCII avatars on a forum, if it's got to have them at all.

Ascii avatars would be cool. It wouldn't even have to be more than one letter on a black background, but I would like to choose the color of the letter.
We could even use html with css for ascii avatars:
p.yellowavatar
{
background-color: black
color: yellow
size: big
font-family: courier
}
<p class="yellowavatar">Q</p>
Unfortunately it isn't possible to have a css element belonging in multiple classes, I checked... This scheme would result in nasty duplication of code for different colors. Someone who is better at this may find a way to make this better. Of course simple gifs are also a possibility.
it would be much simpler to create gifs. the standard size would be 80x80 pixels. the files would be much less than 1kb, by my guesstimate. and users could select the pics from a gallery. hosting the avatars on a remote server would open the possibility of users opting for *BIG* files. (this webdesigner shudders)
pic files with a byte count of arount 600 bytes would not take forever to load.
the decision is up to DG. i myself would not insist on introducing avatars.
if everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane
