Thumbnails on forum?
You know, a lot of forums like this one allow posters to have cute little pictures next to their names. Would this be a good practice to adopt for this forum, or would the extra wasted bandwidth consign it to the realm of Mandos?

I'd just as soon go without, but here's a possible compromise:
Instead of everyone having their own avatar, encode one avatar per... I'm not sure what you call them, but the labels under our names such as "wood elf" and "maia", etc....
That would cut way down on the different types of avatars and on diskspace, though I'm not sure if it would save bandwidth.

I think Maylith's got a pretty good idea going. I personally like the avatars. I'm a member on another forum (nothing to do with ToME, though) that makes full use of custom avatars and sigs and the whole deal. I think that custom avatars would be a little over the top, especially considering the type of message board this is, but I think that Maylith's idea deserves consideration.
And it was such a good idea...
I think a small avatar should be allowed if the user can host it on his own server.
If this proposition goes through it would be good it the user could disable avatar as a user option as some other boards have as a option. That way those with a slow connection can disabel the avatars for themself while the other can enjoy them.

In almost every other forum I'm a member of, avatars are allowed.
One word: I hate them, particularly animated gifs. Maybe I'm too old for that kind of toys...
Ok, when allowed I'm using them too, but just cause I feel a bit naked w/o them if anybody else has some.
If it really must be, I'ld vote for non-animated avatars only.

dunno whether the idea of maylith can be implemented. i will look into this.
using avatars hosted on the ToME site would involve both the disk space and bandwidth issues.
personally, i feel no need for avatars.
i will post again tomorrow. haven't got much time right now for elaborate things.

if everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane
good point!Tachyon wrote:I'm inclined to agree with Blackdog: if there are to be avatars, they should be ASCII based - but only if avatars will be allowed. In all truth, I'm against them - thanks to avatars, many forums take forever to load, and messages take up a lot more screen space.
