Maybe I'm on crack, but it looks like the game has at least two different kind of damage conversion. On weapons, it concerts a portion of physical damage into elemental damage, so that something that does 100 physical damage with 15% damage conversion to acid does instead 85 physical and 15 acid damage.
With alchemists, though, the acid infusion (for example) description says that it does 15% damage conversion for all fire damage, but in practice it is not quite. 100 fire damage from a staff becomes 15 acid damage and 0 fire damage, distinctly different from how damage conversion is handled from the branding on a weapon.
IMHO, either the Alchemist's version should be changed to be more similar to the weapon brand, or it should be renamed to something like 'damage degredation'. So that, the acid infusion description reads 'In addition, all fire damage you do, from any source, is degredated to 15% acid damage'.
