Auto-targeting with telepathy...

#1 Post by Hunter »

It's a minor, minor point, but I'm surely not the only person who plays quickly enough for this to be an issue. When using telepathy, auto-target heads straight for the nearest visible creature regardless of whether it's in physical LOS or not. I tend to click/type quickly in battle situations, so frequently I'll fire off a spell at a creature on the other side of a wall rather than one that is physically further away but with a path unblocked by any obstruction because I'll hit the quick-key and enter in rapid succession. This is fine, if annoying, with talents like Rush, that fail automatically and don't use a turn if you target a creature not target-able under the conditions of the skill, but most magic fails and uses up a turn. I was wondering if this could be fixed so auto-target initially goes to the closest creature actually within physical view rather than the closest detected by telepathy.

Doesn't sound that minor to me. You should post a bug report.

Wait, you mean it targets the sensed enemy even if you know it's out of LOS or it targets enemies you don't yet know are blocked? Because I wouldn't say the latter is a bug. Changing the targeting in that case would leak information to the player.

It does both (though that is a good distinction -- occasionally not having to take a round to do vision or the like would be helpful.) It automatically goes to the closest sensed regardless of whether I can tell if there's an intervening barrier. I didn't post it in bugs because I assumed that's how auto-target is actually set up...aim at the closest target in range. Unfortunately, that can be annoying, as explained above, so I was hoping for some finessing since it's a game mechanic rather than an aspect of gameplay. But your point about the possible abuse is well-taken.
