Armor Hardiness is the percent of damage from incoming physical attacks that can potentially be eliminated by Armor.
Example: you have 30% Armor Hardiness and 10 Armor, and you're hit by an attack for 20 damage. 30% of 20 is 6, so your Armor can eliminate up to 6 points of this. Since 10 >= 6, all 6 points are eliminated, and you take 14 damage.
Example: you have 50% Armor Hardiness and 10 Armor, and you're hit by an attack for 100 damage. 50% of 100 is 50, so your Armor can eliminate up to 50 points of this. However, 10 < 50, so only 10 points are eliminated, and you take 90 damage.
I have no idea how Shields work any more. They got changed into something weird and apparently no longer passive. And I miss my automatic Ripostes.
Changed? Shields work as before on the passive side, they still have armor & def same as always.
And you can also use them to Block, which will "absorb" X damage of the next hit. If it absorbs all of it the foe is susepctible to a deadly counterstrike

hi greycat,
ok, so damage received = incoming damage - min ( armor, trunc ( incoming damage * hardiness / 100 ) ) ... something like that. i think i've seem this explained on the wiki, but its kind of making sense with wobbly's comment about the block value not being that easy to read.
(moreA) as for the golem, can i pretty much ignore CUN and WIL for him? i think i can, i just mastered the arena with a test build that had a little more of a combat focus, but maybe there's some kind of consensus on that here.
(moreB) also with the golem runes, i see the small increases that runic golem provides but i'm really scratching my head about what runes to assign to him. can i trust that he actually used beam runes? i think i tried one or two but i'm not sure i ever saw him use them.
(moreC) and with no comments on telos's upper staff portion i think that means i could do good with a shield if i got the extra generic points from the arena and alchemist quests. sure looks like a worthwhile alternate weapon loadout.
(moreD) but one more silly question.. is there a chance of getting an escort quest where the golem could learn to blast a staff?
Golem can and will use any rune except frozen spear more or less flawlessly (if not as intelligently as a human). Frozen spear's currently sorta' buggy with all the AI users; they like to fire it and then immediately step into the projectile, freezing and damaging themselves.
There's only three stats that really matter on a golem; strength, con, and magic, and magic can probably be ignored if you really want to, or lowballed (I like getting reflective skin, but you don't have to, and even if you don't you don't particularly need to get any of the magic talents beyond that). Willpower and cunning are mostly useless on the golem. Willpower in particular is heavily depreciated if you max out runic golem, as that provides a pretty significant amount of stam/mana regen, so your max pool matters less.
Telos staff can be repaired, but it takes finding two more artifacts to pull it off, I think. At the least, you need the bottom half, and probably the staff crystal. Taking it with a shield isn't a terrible idea, per se, but I'd generally recommend trying to max spellpower (or percentile damage boost) over stuff like armor on an alchie.
If you rescue an alchemist escortee, you may be able to opt to pass the staff combat tree to the golem. Try controlling the golem when it happens; I don't think the mastery tree would show up when you're controlling the alchemist. Actually investing points into channel staff would take an item you probably won't get until you're in your mid to upper 40s, though, and it takes some further shenanigans to get the generics points the golem needs to actually invest in the talent.
Currently, the very best thing to do with the Telos staff is to wield the top half in your main hand and wield the Life Drinker dagger with your off hand.
Urist wrote:also what about telos's broken staff? can it be repaired or do people actually invest in armor training to wear a shield along with the top half?
You can't repair the staff in the current release. It's fixable in the SVN version, but it takes a pretty significant investment. You don't need a shield, though. You can also wield a dagger or mindstar.
Question from a frustrated player-
Where is the list of seen monsters displayed? I found a toggle for Monsters/Talents in the keybindings, but I cannot find any display that shows what monsters I actually see. 64x64 tiles are so nice, but view range tends to extend beyond the screen at times.
This is hopefully not a bug, just a stupid question everyone (else) is (already) aware of. I'm getting odd disconnects upon loading a game, I'm immediately told that it has lost it's connection to the server, followed by a reconnect about 5-10 seconds later, but despite reconnect chat-feeds don't show up inn game. The live records on the te4.org site show it as updating, even as adding the things I type ingame, yet still nothing shows up ingame. Characters appear to be updating to the vault correctly, but I'm concerned that profiles may not properly update. Exiting and reloading several times has not corrected the issue... Is this common, or something to be concerned about?

This is a hallmark from a previous interface set-up - the option should no longer be available raelly. I'd suggest switching to 48x48 tiles.
