FTL: Faster Than Light--A sci fi game with a roguelike feel

#1 Post by catwhowalksbyhimself »

As my first ever kickstarter, I supported FTL:Faster Than Light, which is now officially released and available on GoG and Steam. If you like roguelikes (and if you don't, what are you doing here?) it might be something you enjoy. Randomly generated universe/events, permadeath, and that same challenge. It also has a unique feel and system, as you control a ship and it's crew top down, have them man stations, send them to make repairs and fight off invaders and so on. You also can upgrade your ship in a sci fi like fashion, but since your currently also acts as your xp, you have to think very carefully before doing so.

I'd encourage you all to check it out, if you have a few bucks to spare.

Just bought this about an hour ago. Really glad it was on the Steam update news. I remember reading about it on rock paper shotgun a while back, but almost forgot about it. Pretty good so far. Black Mesa Source just finished downloading, so I'm going to play that now, though, haha.

FTL is very challenging and addicting. I'm going to put it aside right now before it takes up too much of my time :/

The games has proven to be much more popular than the creators ever dreamed--and much more controversial. It's attracted a lot of people not familiar with perma death, roguelike levels of difficulty, or the idea that it's okay to just start over every half hour or so. It's been a bit amusing, but some of these people are actually angry and some of them are demanding that the game be changed to be less roguelike. I doubt it will ever happen. There are plenty of other fans happy with how it is now, but the feedback has been interesting.

I have beaten the game. The thing I dislike most about that game is it far too much depends on random - on gear dropped, on gear sold in shops, on exit location and so on. You can be a very skilled player and about 3 out of 4 times you would never be able to beat the game because the gear you need would not be sold.

What I love about tome is that it's huge. You can play the same character for a long time, not just 2-hours-maximum games like in FTL.

But overall FTL's fun, I have played it about 25 hours and I think I'll play more to unlock the rest of unlockables(that's what keeps me ticking).

I disagree on shop luck, and to disprove all the people saying that I've gotten to sector 8 *without any shops*. Engi ship, disabling weapons before enemies can hurt me. I'm in a good position to take down the boss, but I stopped at 5am this morning because I needed sleep :/

Unfortunately getting to sector 8 is by far easier than beating it. If you have not dropped at least two of these: defense drone, laser 3, anti-ship drone, invisibility, decent rocket launcher it's almost impossible to beat the boss.

It sounds like a throwback to the original Rogue. That game was unbeatable without the right luck: a ring of stealth was almost required, testing potions in the right order before a rattlesnake accident, a great weapon and armor, ? of scare monster, and so on. Most of my games lasted about ten minutes and ended with a hopeless battle against a troll.
