[b42]Entrance into the Caldera causes freezing and hanging

#1 Post by sirkh »

...among other things. I was taking my archmage into the caldera for the first time and right upon loading the caldera the game froze, the heads-up display disappeared, and when I tried to reload my save the loading process hung at around 44-50%. On the second and third time loading I tried using the caldera fix I found in another thread but unfortunately that did nothing for my problems.

Someone on IRC told me to attach the log so I did. I don't have any screenshots as the problem itself started this morning and I didn't think to take any screenshots. Also, the latest reloading attempt is what generated the current file attached.

My specifications are as follows...
  • Operating System: Windows XP Professional Edition SP2
  • CPU: Pentium 4 1.5Ghz
  • RAM: 768 MB
  • GPU: ATI Radeon 9250 256MB
I would appreciate any help or insight that could be provided into this situation. I thank you for your time and also for this game that has taken up a great deal of the time I have spent in the past week or so.

Bump.

I had a similar problem; the first part of Caldera loaded fine, but the second half, upon the completion of the 60-turn timer, became a black screen and, upon reload, stuck at 77%.

This is my 9th level 20+ character in b42, all of which have been created simply to unlock solipsists.

I'm beginning the think that the universe is conspiring against my unlocking this class.

Just run it through a normal archiver (Winzip/7zip, or tar). I'm not sure that you can attach it to a forum post - if not, just upload it to some file hosting place and post the link here.

So should I upload my save as well? I managed to back it up before starting a new game again.

Does anyone know what causes the crash?

I've heard from a few others that the Caldera is buggy in general. New content in most games tends to have a lot of bugs when it's first implemented, though they usually get hammered out within a release or two. I've also heard some speculation that some bugs caused by the Caldera are related to the shading options, which are something that my copy of the game is unable to really display because of how old my video card is.

I'll just wait until the Caldera is less buggy before trying again, as it's not like I even wanted to play [REDACTED]. I just wanted some experience and loot.

Crash is caused by not having shaders :/ Sorry for that, fix for b43

I can probably turn shaders back on and prevent the crash if I can revert to an earlier save... is that possible?

What kind of shaders does Tales of Maj'Eyal require? My computer is only able to display up to Pixel Shader 1.1 and Vertex Shader 1.1.

Depends actaully, some require more than taht; but it should autodetect and disable accordingly.
The zone is bugged because it's not doing the autodetect :/

Thank you for that bit of information, as that was just the answer I was looking for. I look forward to the new release of Tales of Maj'Eyal that has that fixed so I too may partake in the Caldera.
