Fresh and Clean Language Update Addon

This is the first addon in an ongoing effort to eliminate typos and awkward sentence structure from ToME 4.
ToME is a massive undertaking from a few dedicated individuals who spend a great deal of time creating game code. Occasional mistakes are going to slip through and sometimes one doesn't write the best prose at 3 A.M. ;) I've decided to go through all of the in-game text to improve its clarity while retaining its original meaning.
Here are some examples of the types of changes I am making:

Events
Original text in the "Weird Pedestal Event": "As you inspect it a shadow materializes near you, and suddenly it is no more a shadow!"
New Text: "As you inspect the pedestal a shadow materializes near you. Suddenly, a figure is formed from the shadow!"

"Slimey Pit" renamed to "Slimy Pit"

Class Descriptions
Original description of Defiler: "Defilers are touched by the mark of evil. They are a blight on the world. Working to promote the cause of evil, they serve their masters, or themselves become masters."
Updated Description "Marked by evil, Defilers are a blight on the world. Their vile deeds promote only misery and suffering."
"Do they serve themselves or are they beholden to masters even more terrible?"

What this addon does not do: rewrite the game. I try to stay as close as possible to the original wording whenever possible. I'm not interested in change so much as clarity.
This addon is a work in progress and will eventually expand to clean up the in-game dialogue, item descriptions, talent descriptions, and various small details such as overworld mobs.

Version 1 updates all class descriptions, race descriptions, events, and difficulty settings. Whenever possible I refrained from editing text.

Try it out and let me know what you think! There's a lot of work to do and I'm wide open to suggestions. :D

Fresh and Clean 1.2.1 released!

New in this version:

1. Overworld Encounters: Ex. "orc patrol" vs "orcs patrol"

2. Traps: Corrected misspellings and updated descriptions. Lightning now "arcs" at you instead of "strikes" at you, etc.)

3. Minor Edits: updated Yeek race entry for uniformity

It's here! Version 2.1 of the Fresh and Clean addon. This is a major update.

New in this version:

Massive Item Update: Every single item, item type, and ego has been combed over. Countless typos, syntax issues, capitalization issues, and more were found and corrected. Some items were also edited to better reflect the lore of the game. (Ex. Eyal has two moons, not "the Moon").

Minor Issues: race and class descriptions went through yet another round of optimizing.

There are a couple of items that I believe need editing, but I need to get more information on the lore before doing so. Also, the reward artifacts for the two developer activated quests have not been edited as I have yet to find their entries in the code. There will be a slight update for this.

For the next version I will go through all of the NPCs, monsters, etc. I hope that you enjoy this!

There's really only one left now: the Summertide Phial. Its description reads(after decapitalizing 'Sunlight'): "A small crystal phial that captured sunlight during the Summertide".

From what I understand, Summertide is one of the two moons of Eyal. So is Summertide also an event or timeframe? Or is it just the use of the word "sunlight" that's throwing me off? From talking on IRC it seems that this may have intended to say that the Phial captured light from Summertide during its full moon.

It was written before it was decided there were two moons, so originally it meant the sunlight at the peak of summer (Summertide and Wintertide are also the names of the peak couple of days in the Maj'Eyal calendar).

Here's an alternate description that may be suitable:

"A small crystal phial that was bathed in the light of the Sun at the peak of Summertide. Some of the very essence of sunlight was captured in the phial, and can be unleashed to banish even the darkest of shadows."

Fresh and Clean V2.2.1 released

This is a very small update.

What's new:

Item updates: Summertide Phial was brought up to date with a new description by Grey. There were a few minor adjustments to a couple of items that were updated in the last release.

Damage Type updates: The damage types were reviewed and two minor adjustments were made: tweaked the description for Garkul's spirit and corrected "disembowelled" under death messages to "disemboweled".

Updates for the developer activated special zones were sent to DarkGod.

Yeah baby! Here is the Fresh and Clean addon version 3.1.1. This is a major update.

What's new in this version:

Updated all NPCs: That means that every single creature in the game from rabbits to townsfolk to the Grand Corruptor has been reviewed and most of them updated. This update fixes innumerable typos, misspellings, syntax issues, capitalization issues, and also some lore issues. Some creatures that were not differentiated from each other in their descriptions were given additional flavor text. Ex. Orc Assassin/Orc Master Assassin/Orc Grand Master Assassin.

Items Updated: It turns out that I missed, oh, 1/4 of the artifacts in the game in the last version. Now I am 100% certain that I have reviewed all of the items in the game.

In the next version I will be updating talents. I could use some feedback from everyone regarding which talents have spellpower vs magic issues and anything else that I need to be aware of.

Seems pretty great addon. Just hard to notice the differences, as I'm habitually skipping most text by now. This kind of polish is really nice, I remember being a bit bothered about some of the text when I started playing.

By the way, there's seems to be a 'd' missing from 'end' at Trollmire's npcs.lua at line 90.

Few skills with bit off descriptions that come to mind are Steady Mind (doesn't use dex for anything though it says it does) and Dual Weapon Defense (scales with dex but doesn't mention it).

Thanks Keemossi! I agree that unless you're looking for the differences that they're pretty hard to spot. Most of that is because I wanted to maintain the original authors' work as much as possible.
Now that I've been playing for a few years I skip over the text too- I just want my next level lol
I've managed to get a couple friends into the game and when they start evaluating it, they're reading everything. Watching my friend Josh play it gave me fresh eyes of a sort and I think that this will help get people more interested in the setting.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll make sure to correct that line of code that you mentioned and give attention to those two talents as well. :)

Fresh and Clean 3.2 is up!

This is a small patch that corrects a line of code in Trollmire.
It is recommended that everyone upgrade to this version.

Fresh and Clean Addon 3.3 is up! This is a bugfix release with very minor updates.

What's New:

Fixed Tile Display: Unfortunately I had to revert the overworld encounters to the awkward "Orcs Patrol", "Sun Paladins Patrol", and "Adventurers Patrol" because it interfered with the proper tiles displaying. I also had to revert "Veteran Guard" to "Mean-looking Guard" for the same reason. I will see what I can do via IRC to get this taken care of.

Item and NPC Updates: Several items and NPCs were reedited. My edits have improved clarity but some of them rendered descriptions robotic and monotonous. I am going through and updating the offending passages.

This is a quick update to say that despite the lack of updates recently(I am swamped with coursework), I am *not* stopping this addon. After b43 there is going to be a feature lock while the game is polished up. This is the perfect time for me to not only refine the updates I have released but also to finish the rest of the in-game text enhancement. My ultimate goal is to get this addon to a place where it can be used as a patch for v1. In my next round of updates I *really* need more feedback -the more specific the better. The addon has been out for a while now so if anyone has noticed anything that they would like changed, let me know! :)

Any progress on the addon? And would it be possible for you to push these changes to the main game, given that they really only added polish? Love the addon, it makes everything just a bit nicer in this text-heavy game.
