I must say I'm impressed with your patience for this. If a game BSODed on me more than once I'd never touch it again. You are obviously a better person than I! :)

#17 Post by weiming »

Here's the last portion of the log dump. It didn't seem to work, I'm not sure if
(a) I added the flush tagline to the .exe correctly, resulting in the same latency you mentioned before. I doubt this, as I did exactly as you said, and was able to shoot an enemy and see the result by re-opening the log file.
(b) some other problem cropped up. I noticed what seemed like an unusual number of "particle errors" in the log, so I turned particles off completely, I don't know if this might have affected anything.
(c) the crash somehow...deleted information from the log, or occurred before new information could be saved to the log file.

At any rate, not really sure what happened there. Perhaps I can get some more direction/suggestions?

[EDIT] @ grey: Two reasons really: (1) I'm still holding out hope that I'll be able to play the game, it's a great game! It just...you know...crashes my PC when I try to go into Old Forest... (2) I felt like kind of a jerk for railing at the developer back at the beginning of the thread, to do that and then just leave would make me kind of an ass-hat.
[/EDIT]
[EDIT2]
Oh, I forgot, there's an NPC in Old Forest, one of those ones you're supposed to escort to a portal or something. At first, the game would crash my PC before the Old Forest screen even loaded, then when the NPC's chat window starts to open, and on this most recent attempt, his text box was fully displayed, and then the PC crashed. Would have taken a screen capture but you know....BSOD in my face.
[/EDIT2]

Try to disable your sound device in windows and give it a try. You have some hardware related issue for sure, I never had a BSoD since 5+ years.
Also, you should consider upgrading your comp. Your current one is ancient. You don't even have to spend too much money on a mediocre system.

I'm on a pretty old PC as well and sometimes upgrading just isn't an option (food and diapers take priority when you have kids for instance).

You can try this link.

Though I'd give the first one I linked another shot before using that one. (The first is open source which I trust to not have imbedded spyware or malware. The second one looks reputable but you never know).

Grey is right, thanks for sticking with this. Here is my summary of what has happened thus far. Please feel free to correct it.
  • The game BSODs after entering the Old Forest, but you have not seen this error in any other dungeon.
  • There is an escort on this first level of the Old Forest.
  • You have disabled Framebuffers (disabled in the Video Options menu), Particles (Particle effects density set to 0 in the Video Options menu), and OpenGL Shaders (disabled in the Video Options menu) and this did not help.
Here are some follow up questions to try and narrow down the cause of the crash:
  • Can you give us the exact BSOD error? I am not terribly experienced in BSODs, but my Google-fu may help me in understanding what is going on.
  • Is this the first escort you have seen with this character?
  • Can you create a different character and go to the Old Forest? (statistically speaking another character is unlikely to have an escort of level 1 of the Old Forest as well, but to be safe maybe try this with a few new characters)
  • Try disabling Audio from the main menu. The Old Forest uses a different music file, which I guess could be the problem.
  • Continue playing with this character, but skip the Old Forest. I want to see if we can reproduce the BSOD elsewhere to try and find something in common between the two conditions.
<DarkGod> lets say it's intended

People always get queasy when you give too much info about your personal life but anyway: I used to have a high spec. desktop, 2G+ dual core CPU,4G RAM, 512 ATI GPU...it met with a bad end because of some "issues". Now I'm stuck on my E-PC, and can't afford to buy another gaming PC atm. Anywho,

@ yufra: Yes, your summary is correct on every point.

-You know there is a standard format for BSOD error codes, it's like 0x0000007F (00000,00000,0000,0000) or something, I can't be sure about the exact number of zeros. The only distinct portion of the error code seemed to be "7F", whatever that might mean.

-I have completed maybe two escort missions already for this char, otherwise I would have certainly suspected that is what was causing the crash. I was not aware of the music issue, I'll try that.

-I could also easily skip Old Forest for now, and see if this problem crops up again (as you said, no other dungeons have given me a problem so far)

-I'm not too keen on starting over and having to complete the basic dungeons and everything before I can revisit Old Forest, but I'll see. I know the dungeon layouts are randomly generated, but what about position of dungeons/towns on the over-world map?

Thanks for the continued attention to this issue, I'll see what happens. I've been playing DoomRL in the meantime. So many roguelikes are quite simplistic in comparison to ToME though, just doesn't give the same feel. Dungeons of Dreadmore* was the only one that even came close, and even that was slightly "m'eh". Oh well *sigh*.

You can enter the old forest with a level 1 character. That dungeon is always open, and always at the same location on the world map.

Didn't some people use to have problems with the rain effect in old forest? I have no idea if one can disable that though.

I have same problem with entering "Old Forest" with BSOD 0x0000007f(0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).
BSOD was in all cases, with load game, or new game with new avatar.
Solution was founded. And it worked for me.

The reason of this BSOD was bug in official driver for "Realtek(r) High Definition Audio Codec".
Some disscusion about problem:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=161177
Patch for driver and instruction here:
http://r-1.ch/rtkhdaud.html
Be sure that you install HDA Codec driver only R2.14 version. (If not - just google for it, because official page only with R2.70)

(Sorry, for bad english)

UPDATE: I cant update this post earlier, so do it only now. I have mistaked about real reasons of crash.
After I did all things described upper, game dont crashed anymore. But when I switch driver from "2 channel" mode to "6 channel" (i have 5.1 system) problem return again.
So now before run game you must not forget to switch driver to "2ch" mode. And after doing this - location "old forest" will played without crash.
Hope this REALLY help from now.
