thoughts on the new Minimalist UI

#1 Post by tiger_eye »

The new Minimalist UI is great, but it still has a few rough edges:

(1) Can't move resource bars flush to the right side:

(2) Can't left-click on expanded minimap to move (or middle-click to recenter viewport). I do like how tooltips work with the expanded minimap.

(3) Drag and drop of talent icons doesn't work properly when talent bar is flush left or right (so the talents are ordered from top to bottom first, not left to right).

(4) Why do these resource bars think they're flush right?

(5) tooltips are placed as if the talent bar is still placed below them. Not a big deal atm.

(6) Resizing the talent icon bar eventually increased the memory usage of tome by 2GB. It didn't increase above that, but nor did it drop. This seems excessive. Perhaps it's the stone background texture.

(7) With the new resizable talent icon bar, binding a location on the bar to a hotkey was very un-intuitive (to me). I'd like to bind a hotkey to a talent, and have the talent keep that hotkey regardless of where I move it on the talent bar.

(8) Organization of icons in talent bar could be more functional and more clear. Suppose one wanted to have it on the side such as this:

This currently uses *all* hotkey locations. The area below the talent icons are unusable. The talent icons themselves seem cluttered and cramped. One could improve the organization by having gaps between groups of similar talents. Increasing the border between icons could help decrease the cluttered and cramped feeling. Also, removing or changing the hotkey display (such as "[S]+6") would decrease the clutter immensely! If you want to know what the hotkey is for your talents, perhaps it be toggled to show the hotkeys while pressing [shift] or [ctrl]. Also, perhaps the background texture could be transparent.

(9) I would love to be able to hide a specific resource bar. If I learn Providence from an escort, for example, I will never want to see the positive energy bar.

(10) The status effect UI handle cannot be moved if you currently have no status effects.

(11) On my UI wishlist is the option to have more than one talent icon bar :)

(12) The equipment doll still doesn't show the secondary weapon set.

That's all I've got for now. If other people have any other thoughts or critiques, please share now!

Whilst I agree with a few of the quibbles, I must also emphasise how completely - amazing the new look is. ToME4 has undergone many changes to make it look as gorgeous as any AAA game, but this is the most salivating so far. I can't wait for b38 :D

Agreed, DGrey :D

(1), (3), and (12) I regard as low-lying fruit that ought to be remedied (and should be easy enough to remedy) for b38. The other nine are for whenever DarkGod is feeling ambitious :P

I'd add in that if you add a category point to something that accompanies a new resource, and then don't commit to changes, you get the resource visible permanently.

This could be fixed with the ability to hide the resource bar, or by having another check in place I suppose.

Thanks anyways though!

(sidenote: I am using darkwood UI presently but assume this issue is universal)
