B37 sticks at 0% loading

#1 Post by MisterCrowley »

I recently heard about this game on the somethingawful forums and it sounded nifty, so I figured I'd give it a try. Game has other ideas, apparently! I'm running WinXP 32 bit and when I try to start it up, it sticks at 0% loading for as long as I'll allow the process to sit there. After digging around for a while, I found te4_log and stderr in the main directory. They seem related to the problem so I'll post the contents here.

logfile:

PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (Unable to initialize: attempt to call a string value)

If you need any other information let me know, I won't be futzing with anything else until I get word.

EDIT: We're chatting about this problem in the SA games thread for tome as well, and people who aren't having my problem also have that error in their stderr file, so it might be unrelated.

In another thread a user had a similar problem and fixed it by first running and installing B31. I went ahead and tried it and amazingly it worked for me too. Don't know what the deal is but I'll leave this here in case it is of help to anyone else.

Most of the people having problems have been using Windows 7 64-bit, so the usual "check your video drivers, etc." may not apply. That `PANIC` line you are getting isn't something to worry about (oddly enough) and the error if any is actually lower down but not being flushed to the disk. If you can right-click on your executable and pass `--flush-stdout` as a command-line argument to the executable you may be able to see the error you are having. It doesn't hurt to update graphics drivers, either. Good luck!
<DarkGod> lets say it's intended

I have exactly the same thing happen with b37, b38 and b39. (currently downloading b40) b31 works just fine for me; the ones in between I have not tested.
