[b37] Forced-reboot of PC when entering Old Forest

#1 Post by Helios »

OS:WinXPSP3 32bit, zh-cn (Simplified Chinese)

CPU: I5 750
GPU: HD5850
RAM: 4G

Upon entering the Old Forest south of Derth, the whole OS system will crash and force PC to reboot, and a "System has recovered from a serious error." message shows up after reboot.

The map itself seems to load normally, as the map can be seen briefly while autosaving, and then the crash.

Here's the log file. Note the file ended abruptly.

I'm getting this same issue, across multiple characters. My best guess is that it has something to do with the graphical environmental effects in the Old Forest, but I tried disabling everything I could in the video options menu and it didn't help. Is there some way around this?

Can you guys update your graphics drivers and then try again?

Maybe a short-term workaround would be to use ASCII mode to go through the problematic levels? Or have you tried that already?

Is there a way to turn on ASCII mode without loading up a save? Because my save is right inside the Old Forest and it crashes within seconds whenever I try to load it

Update: I was able to do this by making a new character and disabling those effects that were crashing me. I got to the Old Forest on a new character and it held up, no crashes.

Unfortunately, while graphics settings you make in one save persist across all saves, the weather effects don't change for areas you've already visited. So I basically have to give up my original Bulwark and my Alchemist for lost :(

It's kind of weird that there's a bunch of graphics options you can only access from in-game, and it's also weird that some graphics settings just won't apply to a given save if you've ever visited a relevant area once before. Oh well, the important thing is I can play again!

That is a great point, and I am sure DG will look into this. Cheers!
