b34 game runs slow after upgrading to a better computer
Tome runs slow on my new computer, not sure why since it's much better than my old one, tried to change all the settings, tried every configuration. I don't have the memory hog issue in the other thread, tome consumes a consistent 140mb ram.
Symptoms:
I get 1/4 - 2 seconds of delay on my actions, moving, doing anything, even my mouse cursor has the delay when mousing over game options and inventory stuff. It doesn't appear to be related to what is happening in game, can be in empty town or vault with all enemies aware and no change.
Settings that made an improvement:
turned antialiased text off, setting framerate to 60 instead of 30 (cpu consumption jumped from 10%-30% but reduced lag about 1 second).
Nothing else in options seemed to do anything.
My old computer ran pirated windows xp, very bare nothing special, had 512mb graphics 2.0ghz intel, 2gb ram
New computer is windows 7, emachines, 2.8ghz AMD, 1401mb graphics, 3gb ram
I'm not sure what other information is needed, but will supply if asked. Thanks for any help!

I've got same problem now. newer computer, abuot 50x slower -too slow to play. different graphics card perhaps?

Have you checked your video card's settings? It may have FSAA (Full Screen Anti Aniasing) and a number of other filters turned up by default, which could cause a slowdown. Might be a Windows 7 issue, also.

Yes, and found out there is no graphics card! I tried on a five year old pc instead on xp and it flies!

ok, so i"ve changed to yet another computer, this time, five year old laptop. it runs b35 without missing a beat, yet b36 doesn't even get to the front page. It just hangs forever. Here is the log:
yep, that's all it says. I doubt it's even getting past preinit.lua or init.lua.
What has happened from b35 to b36 that makes the program not even start?
IS there an option I can set to make it work?

How many cores do you have, and it looks like it hangs during boot.lua found in: /dir/tome/bootstrap
Re: b34 game runs slow after upgrading to a better computer
I have the standard game only.
I ran under gdb but that revealed nothing, as program doesn't run. It hangs after 6 threads are listed in gdb screen.

I believe he was referring to processor cores; i.e. is your cpu dual-core, quad-core, etc.?
Since you said it's five years old, I'd guess it's a single core. If you're not sure, open up the task manager, go to the Performance tab and check how many graphs are in the "CPU Usage History" box; it will have one for each core.

One core. It is very system dependant though, as an older desktop runs it fine, but my laptop doesnt.

Since it's a laptop: check the power settings. If you have the power options tray control (
), you can access it by right-clicking; otherwise it is in Control Panels. Make sure "High Performance" is selected. If it is not, then select it. This is for the CPU Power level; systems often have "Balanced" as the default, and it sets the processor power level lower; you want it 100% EXCEPT if you have heat issues. I have a problem with Tome 4 keeping the processor at near 100% even though it is more than enough for the game (1.9GHz Dual-Core, 2GB RAM) which in turn causes overheating and eventual emergency cpu power down due to extraneous temps. If you have an issue with heat, click "Change Plan Settings" under the "High Performance" box on the main page of the power options. Click "Change advanced power settings," then find "Processor Power Management" in the tree and set both minimum and maximum power states to 90%; if the heat problem persists, take it down in 10% increments until it stops locking up.
