Sorry about that, and I already voted for TOME...

Shame I didn't vote for Infra Arcana though...just got to play it...actually pretty good...
Why can't TOME 4 has a secret room where you can represent game bugs as, well, enemies you can crush like in Divine Divinity? That would be cool...

No problem, sometimes we all get a bit carried away :)

I find myself in quite an awkward position. I want to make an appeal to ToME 4 fans that isn't in their (apparent) best interests, but I think is; but I'm unable to do so without dangerously threatening the impartiality and overall result of the poll.

Instead I'm going to present a collection of quotes and let you infer what I'm suggesting:

'but it's outright depressing that Dungeons of Dredmor is doing so well. It's easily one of the worst roguelikes ever (which could be fixed if they added diagonal movement and a non-retarded camera angle).'

'Why should DoD be on the list? Its updates aren't announced on Roguebasin either. Same goes for Binding of Isaac. What I'm seeing with this out-of-the-blue new rule about Roguelike Radio is someone making allowances for their own favourites.'

'Too bad just about every commercial roguelike is a piece of shit. Not to step on people's toes too hard; you're free to like them, but you're liking inferior offerings.'

'NOT hurrrr I walk an shoot durrrr. The difference between deftness of mind and deftness of fingers, see? Seriously, I try to keep myself from outright cussing as free discussion is awesome (and people who go NO, STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE are not) but if you consider BoI to be a roguelike you clearly have no idea what a roguelike is.'

'I can't believe how many votes DoD has! it's barely serviceable at all as a roguelike, I wouldn't force it on a child over the age of 6.'

Hi andrew,

1stly, apologies I only saw your post now and approved it. :-( Not sure why I never noticed it in the moderation queue. (We have several other moderators too who somehow missed it).

2ndly, I sincerely hope that it's not ToME fans posting those comments (none of the usernames seemed familiar, other than Darren Grey, whose comments were fair and even pro-dredmor/isaac). I haven't played DoD or Isaac, but I am sure they are awesome, and I have to agree they should be on the list, and I hope that Diablo 3 makes it onto the list too.

Even if Diablo 3 wins roguelike of the year in 2012 it probably should be deserved. But all the other roguelikes will get exposure. I myself looked at the XCOM roguelike, Isaac, Dredmor, and some others because of the list. So good comes from it, even if commercial titles win it.

Yeah, I had followed the posts in the comments section, and the overall tone really surprised me. I doubt it's representative of the overall roguelike community, and it certainly isn't representative of the ToME community, which I have generally found to be very welcoming, helpful, thoughtful, productive, and kind. But, since ToME4 is currently in the lead (woohoo!), some potential players of ToME4 will no doubt attribute the negativeness to us!

So, if we want more people to come play ToME4, then we should heed Mr. Doull's appeal to our kinder nature and give everyone a big hug :-D . It is what gracious winners do (even before they win :-P ). If you want to post a comment, it accepts a variety of online identities. If you want to use a semi-anonymous identity, you can easily make one here:

Think of Dungeons of Dredmor as a gateway drug to roguelikes, and ToME4 as the, um, crack of roguelikes?

From what I had seen I assumed it was Crawl fans making those sorts of comments. They make similar disparaging remarks about ToME4 last year.

Incidentally, everyone should check out the latest episode of Roguelike Radio, which covers the Roguelike of the Year topic in depth, and has some direct advocacy for ToME4 from me:

The Diablo series is very roguelike if you play it in hardcore mode. It is sad to see disdain for a series that created one of the first real time rpgs.

Bump. We're in the lead but could always use more votes!! Lets put some more space between T4 and Dungeons of Dreadmor!

Was away for a couple of days (usual business trip), I come back and I see T4 still in lead, great :)

As for DoD, nowhere did I trash its name and I do not see thrashing in this very thread either. People were saying they don't think it should be included in the poll which they certainly are entitled to say(opinions opinions!) but I fail to see where we (collective we) trashed on DoD itself.

As for my personal opinion on DoD, I am not a fan of it, mostly because it feels slow and the gameplay is not fun *to me* (I bought it to try it) but I fully recognize this can be a very good game for some and the work that has gone into it is self evident and I happily congratulate gaslamp games for it.
(On the same note there are very very very few roguelikes I find any good to play *for me* yet I can see & respect all the work and marvellous things their devs have done)

All that being said I can not stop but wonder why you (andrewdoull) think it is T4 fans in particular that thrashed DoD on your poll? I fully agree those comments are out of line but why specifically post here about it?
To me the way you should have done it is either to not post at all or to post the same message on *all* major game forums not just here.

I am sorry to get a tad angry at it but have you read T4 forums for a while (and I do not mean just this thread) ? This forum is one of the nicest I have seen in ages. Most moderation goes only toward removing spam. Most discussions are done in an intelligent and polite manner, and when there is a mishap usually the people involved calm down and write apologies swiftly.

I try to take the time to get involved with my community of players, which I do not think many devs do (but they should), and I get much joy from it in return. To sum it up, this is a good place filled with good people and I resent a bit that you would specifically target us like that.

I hope this was simply a misunderstanding and that there is no hard feelings, you are a good member of the RL community and I would hate to have to hate you :)

Sorry - I knew I was being too ambiguous.

I didn't at all mean to imply that T4 fans are making these negative comments. In fact, I see absolutely no evidence of that happening.

I was more thinking out loud how nice/funny it would be if Dungeons of Dredmor ended up winning after having had such negative feedback from a bunch of people who clearly don't know any better.

Feel free to draw any conclusion you want about where I'm doing this thinking out loud :)
