Roguelike of the Year 2011

Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
It only includes games released or updated in the last year.
I think it's unfair on Dredmor to attribute its success solely to graphics. And commercial successes should be embraced, not excluded. Too long have roguelikes lived in a dark age of inbred mechanics and little innovation. ToME4 has played a big part in showing how improved UI is nothing but good for a game, and it's good to see others proving the same principle.

Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
Seriously, what's wrong with commercial games?
Roguelikes being commercial is not a bad thing, after all it's a niche genre, being commercial and advertised means more people would come and play...seriously, the one of the reasons normal roguelikes can't sell is because of bad UI and graphics...it's commercial in Japan for quite a while already...
And 100 Rogues was included last year...and that's commercial...
I voted for both Dredmor and TOME 4, mind...and a host of other games...too bad Incursion didn't get an update...would have voted for that...

Why can't TOME 4 has a secret room where you can represent game bugs as, well, enemies you can crush like in Divine Divinity? That would be cool...
Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
Next year, should the competition include Diablo III and Torchlight II? Including commercial games is totally unfair.
Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
Tome4 now trails by 7...

Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
@Mithril: Why not tell that LAST year then? 100 Rogues is commercial, but NO ONE COMPLAINED!
Damn the it's popular now it sucks phenomenon...

Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
Overgeneralization much?

Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
Likely no one complained because it was a game that was unpopular.
It is a totally different story if commercial games like Diablo III with maybe hundreds of people working on it are allowed.

Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
And thus my point is proven...same goes with the comments on the vote blog post on that site...

Not sure what your point is but I do not dislike TOME and Crawl despite their success. Neither do I dislike Diablo.onyhow wrote:And thus my point is proven...same goes with the comments on the vote blog post on that site...
Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
You wanna complain that 7DRLs and other minor roguelikes have to be compared to ToME4? A roguelike is a roguelike, we should be accepting of all guises that comes in. (Which doesn't include Diablo3 are far as I know...)
Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
Also it should be noted that ToME4 has caught up with Dredmor and still has a very strong chance of beating the commercial roguelike - cool shit. Oh, and hopefully the Dredmor fans watching the poll will now be thinking "Ooh, what's this cool other game to try? And it's free?!"
Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
@Mithril: I posted it, but no one took a look...it's called it's popular now it sucks phenomenon...hatred for/disliking something just because it's popular...not because of any other legitimate reasons...your post just proved it...100 Rogues is commercial roguelike, but no one complained because it's not popular...then why complain about Dredmor/Binding of Isaac now?
Also, Cardinal Quest was a commercial game, yet it is on the list...no complaints? And no mentions of Desktop Dungeons, who will become a commercial title soon? Or Block Rogue, who actually get a featured game article on Roguebasin?

I do not dislike DoD because it is popular in itself. That is great. I dislike it because it is unfair to compare comercial to non-comercial. Especially because commercial tends to favor graphics over interesting gamplay. I want interesting gameplay to be rewarded.
Re: Roguelike of the Year 2011
@Mithril: Worse argument...so the free games are better just because they're free? Commercial games can't have interesting gameplay? Oh joy, so the people who work for money must create games that focus solely on graphics and not gameplay? Joy! Frozen Synapse sure is suck huh? Or AI War? Woo!
Sarcasm aside, first: you did not laid your argument clearly...second: you assume that all commercial games focus heavily on graphics...three: commercial games can't have good gameplay because they have to focus on graphics...well, here's the thing: some of people do game dev as a living and not hobby, they have to price things so that they can have income...also, you assume that money most likely = graphics focus and that people are hooked to the game JUST BECAUSE of graphics...really? Commercial games can't have interesting gameplay? Your argument essentially boils down to that...
To give non-roguelike examples, the 2 games I mentioned above fit perfectly...Frozen Synapse has functional but simple graphics, and AI War graphics just sucks (although post 4.0 it's improving), but the gameplay itself is more interesting than several of the more high-budget titles out there...
Here's another thing about Dredmor: it's fun...it's not so complex like other roguelikes, but it's fun...you think TOME 4 is complex like Nethack? Hell no...but both of them are fun, and people like it for that...the graphics then are just bonus...it might be a hook for Dredmor, but not a big one...TOME has good graphics, but does it matter that much? Not quite...
Then I'll ask another question: you seem to target Dredmor so much, but since I gave examples of games that are commercial on that list, WHY DON'T YOU RESPOND TO THOSE?
