New Music

#1 Post by SpongeJr »

Hello, community!

I am working on some new music for ToME... I'll be posting little samples here for comment.

Ok here are two samples I've currently got:

They are rough snippets, but hopefully it'll give everyone some idea of what I can do.
The links are below. They are fairly small (<1 MB) Ogg Vorbis files.

The first one is a snippet of a little fantasy-type song.

The second one is a snippet of some frantic "chase" or battle-style music... I'm picturing it maybe on the Ambush! screen...

These aren't intended for redistribution or anything, so please don't pass 'em around. Please DO feel free to have a listen and comment!

Thanks!

Hi Sponge,

It is great to see interest in improving the great game.

Unfortunately I do not see either of the two songs coming into the game -- as they are now. The uptempo one is good at creating tension but I don't think (others may differ) is quite in line with the artistic style of the rest of the game.

The second, although in the artistic style (I'd say), is way too short.

Err... they're supposed to be short... they're... "rough snippets", heh.

Both have a bit more to them that I didn't upload, and are works-in-progress. I was sorta trying to get some opinions before developing and polishing them more.

Thank you for the input though... I've actually got about a half dozen or so ideas I'm working with, so I'll upload a few more over the next few days, and maybe some more developed versions of those.

Cheers.

Also, there's been some discussion of sound & music "packs", kinda like tilesets. It seems like things are 98% of the way in place to be able to support the idea... So, those with different tastes might want to change it up from time to time and select the "fantasy music pack" or the "jazzy music pack" or the "speed metal pack" or whatnot...

I think you have your file labels mixed up in the links...

I have to say they're not really to my taste, but then it's hard to tell from rough snippets. The choral sample on the frantic one is especially bad in my opinion. Are they meant to sound like SNES midis? If polished up significantly they could sound a lot better.

Anyway, regardless I think it's great that someone is making an original music pack for the game. There's a lot of original work gone into ToME4 from various sources, and music is the one area that has been seriously lacking so far. Please keep posting more examples - some of us may be critical, but plenty will be supportive too :)
