tome optimization

#1 Post by Charlatan73 »

Hey - I'm running tome on a somewhat old laptop and the new features, while being really cool, tend to put more and more strain on the CPU.
Is there a recommended list of settings to optimize CPU? I already have FR down to 5 along with the other video options set to minimum levels.
Is there somewhere else I can look for more optimization? For instance, is there a native resolution?

If you are playing a character within the game you can change the settings in the menu Game Options to try and get more performance out of your system.

Relevant settings in the Game Options menu:
Save per Zone/Save in the Background - background saves allow play during the save but slow down your game, and saves per zone obviously increase the total time for loading a zone than actually playing
Smooth Creature Movement - setting this to 0 should make movement appear nigh-instantaneous and make the game seem faster
Weather Effects - weather can actually have a large impact on performance and should be disabled if you have issues
Day/Night Cycle - a neat little light setting that changes the "lens" that the camera looks through, a cute extra detail but could impact performance
Fog of War - makes fog of war in blocks, less impact on your machine
Interface Style - no idea if this would change performance
Icons for effects/abilities - load up less pictures and rely on text alone for information on skills and effects on yourself/monsters; might affect performance

You can also try changing the Graphic Mode from something nice looking like Shockbolt to ASCII for more performance.

Also, there are some memory leaks somewhere, so exiting and restarting can help if you can run the game fine for at least a short while. My laptop can run it fine for around a half hour before it starts getting intolerable.

On my desktop it starts out using ~90,000 K memory(according to task manager), and I've seen it get up to using ~600,000 K after a long session. Just periodically re-open it and all is well.
