Announcing the new incarnation of MORE

#1 Post by catwhowalksbyhimself »

So you may or may not have heard of my little MoRE module project, a little expansion of the base ToME. Well, Dark God's latest innovations have made that effort unnecessary. So does that mean the project is gone and done with? No. It will instead be taking a new form.

With that in mind, I am please to announce MORE--The Massive Online Repository of Excellence.

What is MORE? It is two things.

1. A collection of mods designed to work together to extend the base ToME experience. Essentially this will provide the same experience as the previous MoRE module, only this time you can pick and choose what you wish to be in it. You can, of course, install all the components, but each one will be separate from that others and can be added and removed as you wish. Any modders are free to submit something to the official MORE collection, so long as they allow me to include it in a mass download and to tweak it if needed for compatibility purposes and it fits the ToME world without clashing or contradicting other mods. (I will consult those whose work would be affect before changing anything)

2. A standard for keeping compatibility between all community content. If a modder has something that either doesn't fit or they don't want included, they can still submit it for testing of compatibility against ALL mods either in MORE or previous tested. This will make it an officially MORE compatible mod and make it easy for the player to mix and match mods at his pleasure.

Along those lines I will start work on converting the old MoRE content. If you previously has something included, let me know if you want me to convert it to independent mod format for you, or want to do it yourself.

Thoughts?

Makes sense with the addon stuff, I say go for it. Far better to have something fairly organized running from early on than cobbled together in the future after a, hopeful, flood of interesting modules, addons, etc.

That's the idea. While the mod system does make it relatively easy to get different add ons to work together, it's still not that hard to do things that would conflict, so having an organized system to coordinate things will head that problem off at the pass, while letting the user just download a bunch of stuff at once and not have to worry about it further.

I'd recommend studying up on a thing like this made for Torchlight....what was it...Torchleech maybe(?)...or perhaps better the fresh newcomer HotSpot..from the perspective of what works well, missteps suffered from, etc as the nature of the game has much in common with the types of issues people would likely run into with going wild in ToME 4.

You're talking apples and oranges here and the ToME modding system is far more capable of handling multiple things at once than just about anything I've ever seen. Plus trying to use on game to learn to mod for another is like reading a book in French in order to become a better writer in German. They are completely separate things with only some very general things in common.
