NPCs move while you're answering a dialog

My Anorithil escortee was standing next to the portal, and I had crossed the room and was standing on a staff. I pressed my hotkey for Transmogrify, expecting that I would be able to nuke the staff, and then she'd maybe step on the portal after that. Or maybe she'd not step right away, and I'd still have more time to move around while she was admiring the portal.

But what actually happened is:

• I pressed the hotkey.
• The transmogrify dialog appeared with one item on it.
• I pressed the "a" key.
• The game snuck a NEW DIALOG in as I was pressing "a", and my "a" answered the NEW dialog, which was "choose your reward".
• Pressed "a" again to transmogrify the stupid staff.
• Looked in the "j"ournal to see what I got. +1 Magic. I would not have chosen that.
