The current wording seems both clear and grammatically correct to me; I'm not seeing the issue, either.

I think it is gramatically correct, but the alternate interpretation of "practiced" and the common substitution of "they" as a gender-neutral singular nominative pronoun in place of "he/she" is what is causing confusion. I get what TalonJ means now. Sometimes you read something the wrong way, and it just sticks in your head.
