[b33] Still taking damage from Tidal Wave after effect gone?

#1 Post by Gliktch »

I encountered an Orcish Cryomancer in the Elven Ruins which I defeated, but then almost died unwittingly because I was still taking 42 cold damage per turn when I started moving, despite that there was no longer a graphical effect on the ground from his Tidal Wave, nor was there any status effect listed that could have explained it. The message was simply the usual "Orc Cryomancer hits Ranger Stacey for 42 cold damage", with no indication of where the damage was coming from. I think the most likely answer was that the Tidal Wave graphical effect (blue tinge on ground tiles) faded before the actual duration of the (damaging) effect reached its end. Sorry I didn't get a piccie or game backup, the effect was gone two turns later so probably wouldn't have helped much anyway :P

Tidal wave does cold and physical damage, so if there wasn't a physical component then it couldn't have been tidal wave. Ice storm, maybe. I've noticed that sticking around after the person casting it has died. The graphical effect remained, though.

I really should've saved the log from then.. It's my current character (Ranger Stacey, Higher Archer, lvl 14 or 15 now) - is the complete character log stored somewhere? It was/is the only cryomancer I've encountered in this game so I'd be able to find the relevant portion without much effort.. I'll look when I get home ;)

My suspicion is that whatever effect it was may have a fixed duration on its graphical effect, but due to monsters being able to have such things at semi-random tlvls, the duration of the damage might have been extended beyond what is possible for the player..

Or it could simply have been the same particle-effects-disappearing bug that I poster another thread about.

There's nothing with a fixed length graphical effect, so likely some other bug. The log is stored in te4_log.txt, but it gets wiped every time you restart the engine.

Yeah, most likely ice storm. Cryomancers leave those behind pretty often, and I always assumed it was the disappearing particle effect thing at play.

Another issue with that: My ability to see the ice storm particles apparently measures from the center of the storm. In other words, although the area of effect with the particle display may be within my visibility, they don't show on screen unless the "eye of the storm" is within visibility. So it's pretty common to have the particle effect visible in the tile next to you, take a step back and it disappears, take a step forward and it reappears right next to you. Just, kind of a minor annoyance.
