Toggleable option to help clumsy/careless people like me

#1 Post by Ripperzipper »

I have played many roguelikes and including this one have the same problem with every single one: I always end up making really bad mistakes because I get too clumsy with the keys or am too careless which causes me to move too much when I shouldn't and gets me killed from holding down a button too long or something, maybe it would be possible to add an option you can turn on or off that will halt gameplay with a popup window that says "*WARNING* Low health) and has an OK button on it that you can either click or just press enter to dismiss. This way it will halt any continuous movement and give you a chance to see say... the level 20+ melee skeleton you have just been swinging wildly at with your level 15 archmage by accidentally holding the move left key for too long

1) Never, ever, hold down a movement key in a roguelike game
2) Shift + movement key is your friend here

I think that vanilla Angband had/has this, I seem to remember key repeats being interrupted by anything that would interrupt resting or running (or maybe low HP, or something else). I liked it, as i saved me from several stupid mistakes.

The safest option is to exclusively use mouse clicks for non-combat movement.

My my... much of your post seems like a jest, Ripperzipper ;-) . Why would your level 15 archmage be swinging wildly at a level 20+ melee skeleton? That seems like a terribly poor playing style, but, hey, whatever fills your grave :-P . Seriously, though, when and why are you repeating keys by holding them down?!

Keyboard running ([shift]+dir), as suggested by martinuzz, is fairly robust and should meet the needs of keyboard users. It even runs around known traps in corridors if possible.

Ploppy also makes a very good point about moving via mouse clicks. If Dreadfell is the first or second zone you do, for example, you will almost certainly die from summoning traps (if not before) unless you move via mouse clicks.

The screen also become red when the player is has low life, so as long as your reflexes are faster than your keypresses, this should sufficiently serve as the low HP warning that you desire. Elsewise, enjoy the numerous and colorful death messages! :-D

NOTE: You may need to ensure num-lock is off for this to work. I do (is that a bug or deliberate?)

Well first off the mage thing was a hypothetical situation and second off because it happens, maybe some of you are perfect careful players but I am not, and I know a couple of people who are not very careful about this kind of thing either. the first roguelike I played with it was zangband and honestly it was a life saving feature that I came to love

I think that's a bug. I experience the same thing on my windows XP but I don't think it's an issue on other platforms.

Actually I'm not sure if it is a bug. Or if it is its a VERY old one. I get the same behaviour in both T2 and Angband. I never noticed on them before because I used to use . for running.
