[Mac] Old Rogue-player looking for ToME with graphics.

#1 Post by Oathbreaker »

Hi.

I'm new here. Played Rogue way back in the day on a big old IBM with a 5 1/4" floppy drive.

Was kind of hoping to find something sort of similar with a wee spot of graphics. Not looking for anything crazy fancy, started up ToME and it looks awesome - except the whole "@" thing kind of isn't my thing nowadays. I'm all for retro, but not *that* retro.

I'm guessing there are graphical something or other (tilesets, is that what they're called?) like for Dwarf Fortress, mind pointing me in the right direction? I'd be playing Dwarf Fortress in Adventurer mode right now, but couldn't seem to get the graphics stuff working on my 5-year-old iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.8

Any help would be appreciated. I'm not much of an IT guy but I can handle basics.

As far as I know, it's just Shockbolt tiles or ASCII for now. "Mushroom" tiles (more cartooney) were dropped recently, and "old RPG" tiles are in beta (here).

Oathbraker, you just need to enable tiles (which should be enabled by default). Hit Escape for the main game menu, then select Graphic Options. My reccomendation is the Shockbolt tiles, size is really your own preference (48x48 seems a nice compromise between number of viewable tiles, and detail on artwork).

I did, or rather they were enabled. I'm just looking for something that also has graphics for the player character and NPCs.

Also make sure you're on on the most recent version; beta 31 just came out. Betas 29-30 should also have tiles for the player character, since that started with beta 29. I believe you click the character avatar during birth (char gen) to select a different tile.

beta30 - seems to have lost its music since beta28 - neither v28 or v30 have had anything but an "@" for the player char.

Could be because you are in tutorial mode. You are right about the music missing, that has come up a few times.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

Yeah, number of things without graphics in Shockbolt's tile set is decreasing practically on a daily basis. Non-tutorial mode, every race/gender combo has graphical tiles that differ, and also change as you get more/better gear. Donate, and you get access to something like 16 or so unique graphics to use for your character.
Having satellite internet is a lot like relying on the processes described in those RFC's for your internet. Except, instead of needing to worry about statues interrupting your connection, this time you worry about the weather. I have satellite internet. Fun, no?

Heh.

Why not include it in tutorial mode - it's the first thing that people will likely see as they start the game, right?

EDIT: The music in v28 was seriously awesome, one of the things that made me instantly like the game. Mad respect to the people who did the music.

I guess it's just a little oversight - hopefully DarkGod will fix it.
