Game Mode: Challenges (for cookies!)
Inspired from http://forums.te4.org/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=27150.
The idea is that we (someone who wants to set others a challenge) creates a fairly fixed scenario, call it a mini-game, using the ToME modules classes and skills. Typically one map (maybe 50x50), with a goal, those I can think of currently is "Kill that enemy" or "Escape Alive!", but it could be anything the Challenge creator wishes it to be.
So you load the "Challenge" and you gain control of a character. He could be a high-level one, but it could be any. He could have a big inventory (or a stash on the ground) with a selection of items, and he could have a couple of skill points to spare, but obviously these things are optional.
Then you challenge these roguelike players, if they can finish your "room of death", or whatever similar things you want to do.
All we really need is a way for someone to "throw out" all the parts of the save file not needed for the current level, remove the stairs, and then we have challenge creation made-easy.

+1
Great way to include user-generated content, and it could be a great way for players to improve tactics, learn about talents, see a high level character build, etc.
Also good for when one only has only 10 minutes (ha!) to play

talking about 10 minute games, I was just looking at this:
Youtube - Desktop Dungeons - Under 5 minutes clear

Re: Game Mode: Challenges (for cookies!)
Some modification of the arena code could be good for this. Would need a high score system as well of course :)
Re: Game Mode: Challenges (for cookies!)
hmm, include realtime code, and score by (real life) time elapsed? Or, for a much more plausible way, by turns it took you to escape/kill the enemy/whatever.

Re: Game Mode: Challenges (for cookies!)
I love this idea. If we could get a relatively easy-to-use interface for creating the puzzles I think this aspect of the game could really take off. The timer idea is good, another possibility is to only give the player a set amount of turns to finish a given puzzle (think chess puzzles: white to mate in 3).
Of course longer scenario-type quests would also be possible. How about a recreation of the epic battles from the history of Maj'Eyal? Or even out of some classic DiTLs/ToME lore? You are Lord Dimwit, your greatest assest is your massive amount of hp; you are Eden, your only eq is a dagger and boots of speed - flurry away. Etc, etc.

Re: Game Mode: Challenges (for cookies!)
How about option "Save level as challenge" in the regular campaign (probably only on the level entrance and levels with small areas)? May be only for final battle? Also with possibility to upload to server may be...

Challenge for b31: Can you beat the orc ambush with a slinging, trapping rogue? Give it a try!
This rogue is pretty high level, and I prepared for the battle with gear and talents, so it shouldn't be too challenging to beat this. I don't think the ring "Bloodcaller" works for trap damage, though, so it was probably a mistake to wield that. The secondary weapon set may have actually been better to use (b/c of all the non-physical "on strike" damage), but I wanted to win with a sling, which I did
. Character link is here.
To play this, unpack the attached file and put it in your "tome/save" folder. Also, you need to zip everything in the directory (except "desc.lua") into the file "game.teag".
Good luck and have fun!

Easier download of above challenge here: Ratridevi.tar.bz2
Just unpack and put in your tome save folder. No need to zip things as was required with the previous attachment.

*bump*
Just a reminder... can we get this game mode for when ToME is out of beta?

Another bump
Any chance we could get this for (or shorty after) v1?
I think a Challenges mode that players can contribute to would be really great. The main campaign can be really long, and sometimes I'd like to do something shorter but still challenging, and right now the only option is the Arena.

Just popping in to add my support to this once again. Still a great idea, though I imagine there's enough other stuff to work on that's keeping DG & co. busy. If I had more time, I'd try to help out with this, but that's unfortunately just not possible right now.
