I have found the lack of item and enemy respawning in previously explored zones quite liberating. I love it. If I reenter a zone, I don't need to look all around just to make sure an artifact wasn't spawned on the floor. Plus, the exploratory farportal provides a much better scumming experience: it levels up with the player, and it is different every time!
The main drawback for turning off respawning, it seems, is the brotherhood of alchemist quests can be much more difficult to complete now. Although it is possible to get the ingredients you need from exploring random zones using the exploratory farportal, it can take several tries (which becomes tedious after a while) to get the one ingredient that you want. So, without further ado, here's a way to give the exploratory farportal a more focused purpose:
For 50 or 60 fortress energy, allow the exploratory farportal to send you some place where you can get the alchemist ingredient of your choice. It requires more fortress energy than a simple random teleport because it needs to scan or what have you for the energy signature that you need. For added coolness, it would be great if the unique boss was the same type of enemy that you need for the alchemist ingredient (which makes sense, as the unique boss is presumably the energy signature that the exploratory far portal detected in the first place).

Seconded!
Oh, and could we get rid of needing the rod of recall for the fortress functions? 10-20% of my characters seem to end up without it...

Uh, the first boss drops the RoR, it's auto-identified and it can't be sold. How on earth could you miss it?

Forgetting to pick it up off the ground in the first place maybe?

I don't see how, really. Checked and rechecked trollmire 3, nothing. Anyway, this is getting offtopic.
