Carry over lore between characters

#1 Post by OneMoreNameless »

Currently, there is no gameplay benefit to having lore and I'm not sure if you can even collect it all in one playthrough. It's fun to read, but a little annoying having to search nooks and crannies for it when you do (or have it pop up everywhere when you've seen it before). Ergo, allow previously discovered lore to be browsed similar to achievements.

I agree because the lore doesn't give benefits (usually). Even if it would, usually the benefits are small tips that a player should remember, so there's no point in limiting the lore to the single character. Only if quest lore would exists it would have some meaning.

What if the Sher'Tul home had a library in it containing all the lore the player had unlocked in previous games? It would add another function to the home, and it's certainly more interesting than just starting the game with all that lore unlocked.

I like this idea.

Another option would be to give lore more functionality, maybe through the Orb of Scrying. Collect lore for what's her face get some sort of reward out of it. Would give lore more of an in-game purpose and make the orb something more then just an auto-id device.

Another +1 vote for Flare's excellent idea of a Library in the floating fortress.

PS: Perhaps with a button which will reset the books if a player wishes to re-experience big updates and re-written material.

Actually, there's one piece of lore for rogues that does something, the one that gives the extra trap. But yeah, the sher'tul fortress seems kinda... unfinished, especially with that permawalled off area north of the control room. Maybe at certain power levels the "Library Room" would be unlocked and later gain acquired functionality? Like, power level 50 unlocks the library room, 250 unlocks one of the lore repositories (call it the physical repository, for a placeholder name) with a part of Sher'Tul history involving warriors and such. The repository would act like the chest, you give it items to munch on, it works on translating the lore for you. At levels, you'd get a permanent boost to hp, physical resist, armor pen, etc. One of each. Maybe at fortress power level 500, you'd get access to the rogue ward, which lets you see thieving exploits of the Sher'Tul and access to stuff like dex boost, speed boost, stealth boost, maybe some traps, etc. Power level 1000 would get the arcane ward opened, with mage exploits to help the spellcasters. Wouldn't need to sacrifice items to unlock another ward, so could just use the chest til you get the desired power level. Might want a portable transport-to-fortress-and-back thing in this case, typically would have only unlocked physical ward after Dreadfell, in a good run.
Having satellite internet is a lot like relying on the processes described in those RFC's for your internet. Except, instead of needing to worry about statues interrupting your connection, this time you worry about the weather. I have satellite internet. Fun, no?

The fortress now possess a library of lost mysteries. When you go there you automatically learn all the lore your previous characters have found

Marvelous, Darkgod!

Does this mean that one the library is activated the lore learned from previous characters will no longer populate on dungeon levels? That is what I would prefer, as the intent here (I think) is to remove already found lore, not just reference it.

Obviously, the thief lore should still appear as it gives a reward.

And the lore to open the way to Bill the Troll should as it is a necessary trigger (I believe).

Thanks for all your work!

Bill is probably encountered before the fortress anyway :)

And no this wont prevent generation, yet, but I'm working on that part :)

If old lore is never generated, how long will it take the player to collect all of the random lore? I foresee some illiterate runs ahead...

...Unless the lore generation rate is reduced, and we get a lot more lore.
