Is cunning "garbage" for Alchemists?

I saw someone saying cunning is garbage for Alchemists. Is this true?

If it is, why is it listed as an important stat?

Far as I can tell, alchemists don't particularly need it unless you want to unlock the Cunning\Survival Tree. Or if you are really gung ho about crits.
