So, I managed to kill the master with my Alchemist. He dropped all kinds of stuff, but I already had enough stuff in my inventory that if I picked any of it up, I wouldn't be able to move. so I did what I always do in that situation; I switched to my golem, and had him pick it up. After that I recalled out. I was then ambushed and slaughtered by orcs who wanted a staff. The staff that the golem picked up...
That is when things started to break. After dying, the golem still had the staff, and I was trapped in the area with no exit to the world map. After using debug to get out of there, I went to last hope and talked to the elder about the staff. It correctly realized that the orcs didn't take the staff, but because I didn't have it in my possession, I couldn't complete the conversation, as I couldn't show it to him. This in essence froze the game (it was probably waiting for input, but I couldn't do anything, and had to kill the program from the task manager). I then restarted, and couldn't get my golem to drop the staff, so I could pick it up and complete the quest. So that character can't proceed with the main story line.
I guess there are several ways to deal with this bug, but probably the simplest would be to not let the golem pick up the staff to start with. That or change the quest to correctly handle the fact that the staff may be on the golem rather then the main character. ^_^
