Got killed in the orc ambush after killing the master
I 'resurrected' without the staff of absorption.
Was poisoned
My healing was on cooldown
I died.

Clearly, this should not happen.

You're right, it shouldn't happen...

One of the orc probably had a poisoned weapon and got you with it. An easy fix would be to have you ressurrect with full hp rather than 1 on that event

That's happened to me, too. I think the best solution is to simply rewrite the encounter to not have that silly "player character left alive because otherwise the plot doesn't work" situation. I made a post on the subject here:
