Have you ever played a lost soul and actually gotten out of the Halls of Mandos?

The Right Stuff - for Lost Souls

#1 Post by Tachyon »

What is the best race for a lost soul, other than deathmold? What classes are best to use, and what strategies should I know about? Any information will be appreciated.

Anything that gives See Invisible, so you can flee from Dreads.

You get see invis for free, as a Lost Soul. (But if you are a possessor and you possess something you lost it)

I don't think race matters much; just go for the best stats for your class. Dunadan has good all round stats. Good classes are demonologist, summoner, mindcrafter.

Something with high stealth, such as an elf. Dark elves also get a free ranged attack from level two.

Be sure to have the option connected stairs on, so you can go up/down/up/down... until the next stairway up is close to you.

If possible get detect hidden as soon as possible. Almost any trap you step on will kill you at that depth.

When rolling up the character I try to max strength -- especially for wimpy class/race combos. Everything at that depth is already quick or very quick. Moving slowly because of poor strength is just asking for trouble.

NEVER rest next to a wall. Make sure there is at least a grid or two between you and the wall. Otherwise ghostly things can get first strike when they travel through walls towards you.

I seldom try to leave through the top of the halls of mandos. If I've leveled up as much as I want and have all the items I need (for the moment anyway), then I usually try to leave through the bottom. On level 98 read any teleport level scrolls you've found. Half the time you sink through the floor to the wilderness outside Bree. Staves of Probability Travel also work well this way.

I've escaped the Halls with a DeathMold (child's play), a Dark Elf (tougher), and a Thunderlord (not fun). The Thunderlord escaped by just using the Straight Road to get atop up staircases and flee from everything that showed up.

Why was the thunderlord not fun? They're very cool and very powerful, even with the exp penalty; plus that ranged attack of theirs is really damn powerful, even on level one, and its damage goes up with level  Add the teleport ability and the instant recall, and you have a truly uber-powerful character.

I agree with that. I'm playing one at the moment and he's really powerful. It's the first character I've played that can kill a Leviathan in close combat on level 35. (But perhaps it is just the "Demonblade of Gothmog" I found that gives him such a great fighting skill, its more powerful than "Anduril", but gives a -20 Luck penalty.)

Thunderlords have the worst stealth in the game. Besides Maiar of course. Take one step and pretty much everything in the Halls are on your back.
